The battle was decided by the higher number of phalanges and cavalry sent in the melee by the Macedonians while the Indian elephants were trampling my medium infantries and hoplites.

Back and forth, with both armies mutually exhausting themselves as dusk fell.

Karvon's Greco-Bactrians defeated Ironclad's Macedonians 48-21.

A series of small and medium woods were scattered across the Macedonian rear and deployment area. A loose chain of gentle hills ran from our far left corner to the center of the field. A large gentle plateau with some scattered rough filled most of the right center section and looked down on a medium-sized wood beyond it with a couple of smaller gentles hills running along the back edge. A couple of medium-sized woods filled about half of our right sector.

With the Macedonians potentially having an overwhelming advantage in both quality and quantity of pike, we decided on an almost all horse army supported by a full allotment of our lights and a small division of medium foot, supported by a couple of elephants.

We deployed one division of mixed horse with an elephant on our far left, hidden in a small valley in the hills. We deployed a similar division in about our center. We placed our medium foot division hidden in the woods on our right with a handful of light foot screening the edge of the woods. A third division of lancers formed up behind the woods on our right. A small cataphract and elephant division deployed behind in support. Each horse division had a few light horse attached as a screen. Our far left division had some light foot attached as well. All our light horse deployed far forward to scout and determine the location and axis of the enemy advance. Our plan was to locate the enemy with our lights and shift our divisions behind our screen to maximize our chances of enveloping the enemy with our superior mobility. Our lights moved forward aggressively to find the enemy.

The Macedonians brought a large phalanx, as we expected, deploying in about the center resting its flanks on some woods. An elephant and a few horse were in support in reserve. A small medium foot division emerged from the woods covering their left flank. Most of their mounted massed on their right, screened by a few lights and supported by a pair of elephants.

Our lights massed on our left vs their mounted wing, shooting up and driving in their inferior number of lights. We unleashed a barrage of arrow on their exposed horse, which charged to drive off our skirmishers. We lost a few, but spread out their horse in the process. Their foot line shifted right, following up their horse in support. We shifted our center division to our far left, joining up hidden in the hills. We also marched our cataphract/elephant division to join that wing. Our lights swept forward on our right, probing through the woods and swinging wide around the enemy left as it continued shifting right. Our medium foot and lancer divisions followed at a safe distance behind.

Not wanting to get trapped in a corner by the oncoming enemy horse and pikes, we decided to redeploy out of hiding toward the center where we'd have more room to operate. Our lights continued to harass the enemy horse as our lancers, cataphracts and elephants shifted right. Afraid we'd get away, the Macedonians pressed forward aggressively with their mounted, outdistancing their slower foot. Again, as they chased off our lights, they got more split up and our light were able to get in and shoot up their elephants a bit. We surrounded some of their lancers and sacrificed one of ours to tie up their elephants. In the ensuing running battle, we shredded up the now isolated elephants and pounced on the scattered enemy horse. The pikes lumbered forward in support and began to peel off units to cover flanks, but arrived too late to save their horse.

Meanwhile, on our right, our lancers continued on a long ride around the enemy right, avoiding some pikes which wheeled to face them. Our medium foot halted along the slopes of the plateau staring across the plains at the opposing enemy medium foot division covering left of the phalanx. Their lights moved up behind the phalanx and began shooting at the supporting elephant, which quickly took cover behind nearby pikes. We detached a couple of lancers from the center to move up and support our mediums on the right. The Macedonians responded by sending their mediums towards the plateau with a couple of pikes in support. Our mediums retreated into some rough and the woods to avoid getting tangled up with the pikes. Our lancers moved up to threaten the flank of the Macedonians. The Macedonians belatedly dispatched one of their surviving lancers after their foot.

In the center, our horse pursued the remnants of the enemy horse, throwing in lights, we swept around and past the now loose line of approaching pikes. The rest of our horse we retired and shifted left to target now isolated units of pike. Our lights and lancers arriving from our right, ganged up on a couple of hoplites which were attempting to screen the enemy right.

On our right, our mediums pinned down the opposing enemy mediums from the woods and rough. Our lancers flanked one and disrupted another detached to cover the flank in a series of charges. Our victorious units wheeled to flank the survivors.

On the left, our redeployed horse encircled isolated pikes, but the Macedonians had enough by that point and the battle was over.

sorry for the delay, this battle had been finished for a bit but had got caught up with business.. decided to use allies in place for my ptolemaics... a very expansive battle that stretched the map. Broke off a small detachment on my right to contend with some enemy cav and had nearly turned to disaster for those men but they held strong! The Greek spears were able to come to bear on the Indo-Greek forces before they could let off their ranged units.

Pyrrhic Army on the March!

The Pyrrhic army announced an intention to take a well earned vacation in sunny Asia Minor, and Demetrius (aka Egmont) somehow convinced their Kyrenean Greek allies that we needed passports! The resulting discussion quickly turned to blows, with distinct infantry and cavalry chariot battles, that effectively both resolved on the same turns. I have no idea who exactly won the cavalry battle, but I do know that the victorious Greek chariots were still returning from their pursuits when the overall battle ended. The pike v. pike of the infantry battle was effectively a draw, so the overall battle was won by the remaining pikes outclassing the more numerous hoplites, and then following up for those final rout points.

Another obstacle to the Pyrrhic march to Egypt removed!

The Antigonid 320 army, led by Antigonus [Brenmusik] and the Pyrrhic army of Epirus 280 [Chris Townsend] met on a broad plane with a little rough on the flanks. Pyrrhus delayed the push of pikes in the centre long enough to achieve victory on the flanks with his cavalry and medium infantry, though it was challenging to contain a small swarm of light cavalry. The push of pikes did start with mixed results, but generally trending in the Antigonid favour, given their advantages in quality and quantity. However, the Pyrrhic flanking forces were able to return to the fight in time to assualt the rear of the Antigonid line, seizing the victory before their own pikes collapsed. Good game!

Simon Lancaster (Macedonian 320 BC) defeated jaerho (Greek 280 BC) 62-51.

A tough fight, for sure. A long line of Greek spear threatened to overwhelm me. My opponent skillfully used his light infantry to harass and break a number of units. I was behind for long periods of the game. Eventually, my pike blocks and warbands made a breakthrough on the Greek line to just about get the win.

The Epirote army, under King Pyrrhus, is slowly making its way to Asia Minor. Despite losing a push of pikes against the Macedonian army under Perdiccas [Ironclad], successful attacks on both flanks led to Perdiccas deciding that we could continue our march. The loss of three elephants, while the two Pyrrhic elephants survived, may have influenced his decision.

It was a classic battle with the whole line engaged at the same time.

An Incredible match with a fierce defense of Indo Greek army. Twice I thought that the game was over but Indo-Greeks got to survive. The third match-point was the decisive.

jaerho (Greek) defeats Chris Townsend (Thessalian) 60 to 55.

The Athenians and Thessalians met in a narrow mountain pass along the coast of the Aegean for leadership of the ongoing Greek revolt against the Macedonians. The initial clash saw the Athenians throw a massive light infantry assault through rough terrain against the Thessalian left flank to control two small settlements. The Thessalians met the assault with a combined force of medium and light foot that slowly and deliberately destroyed the Athenian lights in detail.

Meanwhile, the general engagement began, The Athenians built a strong hoplite line in the center while positioning a small force of Thureophoroi on a rough wooded hill on their left. Met with a strong assault from the Thessalian cavalry, the Thureophoroi were eventually surrounded and picked apart by javelin horse. However, the Athenian hoplites swiftly won the central fight. With casualties even, the Athenians sent a second delaying force to tie down the Thessalian cavalry on the hill while turning the bulk of the army to right to fall upon the flank of the fatigued and battered light and medium Thessalian foot just as they were finishing the last of the Athenian holdouts.

Although the Thessalian cavalry remained steady and intact, the near total destruction of the Thessalian foot marked this as a tactical victory for the Athenians. Tragically, the real winner is likely the Macedonians seeking to reinstall their yoke.

jaerho (Greek) defeats gort7078 (Macedonians) 49-18

An uprising of Athenian-aligned Greek settlers in Cappadocia rose up against the Macedonians. With some material support they were able to organize a force of spearmen to fight off Eumenes attempts to subdue them. Anchoring the left flank within in a rocky settlement, the Greeks formed a long line of hoplites to the right. On the extreme right, the Greek Euzonoi and archers used their missile fire to weaken the Macedonian cavalry and elephants. As the elephants and phalanxes became entangled with the Thureophoroi in pockets of rocky ground, the hoplites advanced like a door on a hinge overwhelming the disordered Macedonians. The dream of Greek independence remains alive!
