Triarii with Scots defeats Challenge 1 with Viking (Ireland) 41-11.
Good game and lots of cheap Pictish spears and cheap Scots horse making life difficult for the oh so full of themselves Huscarls.
Going in similar direction in the mirror game.

Division E
principeromanes (Georgian 1008-1049 AD) defeats ChrisTownsend (Byzantine 988-1041 AD) 41-13
Both armies brought a very similar match up – large cavalry wings with a few infantry spreading across the centre. However, somewhat to my surprise as the Georgians, I found myself slightly outnumbered in lancers on both flanks, not to mention somewhat intimidated by the Klibanophoroi anchoring each Byzantine wing.
The Georgians responded by pulling a few bowmen and shieldwalls from the centre to directly support the cavalry. Along with some aggressive light cavalry harassment, it worked to disrupt a few Byzantine lancers before contact, providing a slight initial advantage. The Klibanophoroi still looked intimidating, even when one of them was successfully zoned out by a shieldwall. Things took a dramatic turn when the Klibanophoroi charged into the shieldwall – once it was engaged in melee, the Byzantine knights double-dropped and fell back! That flank – the Byzantine right - quickly collapsed.
Meanwhile, on the other flank, the Georgians again managed to best the Klibanophoroi – but this time by catching them in the flank after a pursuit. Although I managed to get the upper hand on this flank, the Byzantine collapse was not nearly as dramatic.
Meanwhile, the Georgian infantry remaining in the centre faltered against the Byzantine infantry – there isn’t much bowmen or even a shieldwall can do against the Varangrian Guard! But the slower infantry engaged so much later than the charging horses that the battle was already essentially decided by the time the Georgian infantry were properly engaged.
Thanks for the game!

Division E
principeromanes (Spartan 221-146 BC) defeats Karvon (Roman 199-106 BC) 50-18
The pikes of Sparta and legions of Rome met in the middle of the forest – clearly not the preferred battlefield of either army.
The Spartans very reasonably drew up a battle line between two forests, anchored on a few hills (oh, and maybe with a few Thureophoroi hiding in those woods). The Romans, declining a battle in the open, moved over to a hill of their own, complete with a bit of rough on top, just in front of the woods on the Spartan left flank.
The Spartans sent a few more Thureophoroi and some light javelins to try to hold the woods against the Roman flanking force. I managed to more or less succeed – my advantage in number of medium and light foot making up for the woods unlocking the swordsmen POA of the Roman allied Italian foot and Spanish Scutarii.
To attempt this manouver, the Romans didn’t exactly leave their main hill unguarded, but the legionaries left on it were being desperately supplemented by some triarii to extend the line. The Spartan phalanx – supported by even more Thureophoroi was able to extend the line in such a way that the Roman defenders on the hill quickly exposed some flanks and collapsed.
Along with some tough going for the Romans in the woods, the disaster on this hill was enough to cause the remaining Romans to flee the battle.
Thanks for the battle – the horde of Thureophoroi (I only took 4 phalanx) really were fun to play. And it was interesting to see our different Spartan army compositions in the mirror – mine investing in the Thureophoroi vs. Karvon’s significantly more Spartan phalanxes.

Re: HOML 8 Ancients Results.
Division E
I choose Pergamene to fight Romans in their Mediterranean woods, mostly to have some experience with the list in case I wanted to use as an ally it in Asterix's Diadochi Tournament.
The map did end up with extensive woods on one flank, a woods anchoring the Roman left flank, and mostly open in between, although there was some rough on Pergamene's starting position.
As Pergamene, I lined up with lots of medium troops and skirmishers in the woods, some irregulars in the rough and some warriors and a cavalry force on the right flank. The Roman deployment provided no weaknesses for a cavalry attack, so the began a long trek behind my lines to the other flank. Meanwhile, the skirmishers engaged, with the Roman velites taking a beating. The Romans then headed for my hanging right flank, but the medium troops, supported by cavalry, sallied from the woods to rout the Roman defenders just before they could fall on the exposed flank.
Result: Chris Townsend's Pergamenes 40 to Karvon's Romans 15
In the mirror, deployment was similar except the Karvon's Pergamenes deployed a strong medium infantry force against the Roman's woods instead of a force in the centre. The supporting cavalry again moved in a circuit to the other flank. This left the Roman's having to split their legions between supporting their few medium and skirmisher infantry on the left, screen those moving cavalry to avoid intrusions and flanks attacks, and sending troops to support the advance on the Pergamene troops in the main woods. In the end, the allocation was almost correct, but the final result was a draw with the Romans holding the field, due to the timely return of a Pergamene skirmisher.
Result: Karvon's Pergamenes 55 to Chris Townsend's Romans 59
Both good games.

Division E
British and Frankish armies met on a mostly open battle field, with a stream providing a symbolic dividing line. This was mostly a straight up clash of warriors, with the cavalry mainly deployed in support of the warriors, looking for flanking attacks when a gap appeared in the line.
Chris Townsend's Franks defeated Ironclad's British 60 to 47, and
Chris Townsend's British defeated Ironclad's Franks 60 to 43.
As they say in Blighty, both battles were bloody good
p.S. Apologies for the delayed posting of these results!

I appear to have missed posting the result in the mirror of my match up with Bodhran.
My paper results have my British defeating Bodran's Germans 65 to 41. As you can see by the reults, a closer game than the mirror.
That should complete the reporting of my tournament results.

Kroche (Pergamene) defeats Asterix (Seleucid) 13-45
Pergamene medium foot routed their Seleucid counterparts before the Seleucid mass of heavy pikes could arrive to help.
Kroche (Seleucid) defeats Asterix (Pergamene) 12-44
In this match the Seleucid main force of heavy foot battled their way through the Pergamene main line, while the weaker Seleucid right wing took the attention of the Pergamene left wing just long enough to win the match.
Thanks to Asterix for the games.

Division A
markleslie Viking(Ireland) 900-1049 AD defeats carpenkm Scots 851-1051 AD 54-29.
Turn 8 from the Viking POV.
The early stages of a very long hard slog with little movement other than an equally slow attempt by the Vikings to turn the Scots left flank.

Turn 15/16.
An attritional bloody stalemate, both on the hill and on the plain with the slow motion Viking flankers, perhaps, tipping the day beyond recovery for the Scots.

Bloody noses and barrows allround.
Salute!
