For the last one, I don't think the assets, which mean animations/models based on the new engine could be used on the older one. You will also need to make a lot of new models and textures for the Renaissance and Early Modern periods, which will take more time, and use them to upgrade an old game without any payback, that doesn't sound like a possible solution to me.
Why would they want to use new models on the old engine? Surely the whole point of making a new game is to use a new engine?

Of course, if a new game is made they would make new models and textures. They have already been working on the new game for well over a year, so obviously it's not just quick update of P&S using the new features of the Archon engine with the existing graphics.

BTW, just in case people were wondering, the Archon engine can use models from the older games. For instance, players have used some Battle Academy terrain models in user created FOG2 scenarios.

I'm not sure why you are arguing over this? All I said was that if "they just wanted to update Pike and Shot with it's block models, then Archon would be more than adequate". Which is true, Archon would be adequate.

Do I think they will do that? No. Do I want them to do that? No. But some people would be happy with it (see Athos' comment above).

@Paul : to sum it up, if I get it right, according to you, it is likely that the developers have been working for over a year because either they started by developing an upgrade of Archon or they had to learn how to use a new engine, such as Unity (meaning re-writing all the existing code they want to keep, etc.), right ?

(which would be good news, either way)

I think it is more likely they are using a completely new engine. But that's just my guess, I have no actual knowledge of what is going on at all.

imho the main issue with the P&S block models is the fact that it's harder for them to visually tell the difference between units in terms of quality level, armour, Impact pistol vs Impact mounted... In any case, it is less easy than in the FoG2 series.

For me, the only new thing I'd really like to see done with the current game engine is the inclusion of far east and other regions still missing from FoG2 Ancients and Medieval.

I'd love an early modern period FoG game made in another engine like Unity or Godot that would be less technically limiting. To continue using the old engine would be a huge resource sink for modeling and animation work that is already Byzantine Game's obvious bottleneck. Even just visualizing casualties or cohesion in a P&S style block models would require some significant jury-rigging in Archon. More flexible engine would allow for much of the unit/formation level animations and movements to be done directly in the code. The actual animation work could focus on generic elements (individual men marching , shooting, bayoneting etc) and standardized model rigging, rather than the impressive Rube Goldberg-esque arrangements that were needed in some of the later FoG2 expansions (e.g. wagons).

A Field of Glory game that ultimately (after many expansions) covered the 16th to 19th centuries, like the FoG2 Ancients and Medieval currently do for their respective eras, would be amazing.

I myself am hoping for an early modern 1500 to say 1715.

Though an ancient or medieval far east game wouldn't break my heart.

Either way it would be an automatic buy for me.

I clearly understand that a new game would be something much more charming and attractive but, in the meantime, if you’re interested in playing some battles or campaigns set in the Age of Reason period (XVIII^ century), you could have a try with a new Pike & Shot mod that I’ve just now published on the P&S forum, which, at the moment, features 21 army lists (with some new units) and many more are going to be released in the future.
In the event, here is the link:
