So if a battlegroup consisted of four bases of Musket* or X-Bow in two ranks they would get three dice at short range and two dice at long range? Is that it?

Musket* mounted with carbine, bow, or x-bow shooting dice

Could someone more experienced than I am please explain what the line '1 dice per 2 bases of 2nd shooting rank or at long range' means when calculating how many dice Musket*, mounted with carbine, bow, or x-bow throw when shooting. I understand that at short range the shooters would get 1 dice per f...

I am really sorry. I am being completely childish and pedantic but I have now done a little research into the historical usage of "dice" as a singular noun and have found the phrase "Protesting never to touch a card or throw a dice again" occurs in the novel 'The History of Miss ...

Are you merely saying you don’t believe me or are you asking for an actual historical date? If you don’t believe me then maybe you will believe the Oxford English Dictionary. Here is a link to the online Oxford Dictionary page for the word “Dice” in which it is referred to as a singular noun whose p...

I had to stop reading in the third paragraph when the author got on his high horse over the use of the word 'dice' as a singular noun. He is wrong and makes the whole review seem foolish. Either 'dice' or 'die' are correct. In fact it is the author of this review that has made a grammatical error. I...

Ahh I can see my error now. For some reason I didn't realise that dragoons were classed as foot but thought that they were in a troop type all of their own, but there it is quite clearly on page 22! So the dragoons would get the plus one for defending FF or obstacle making the factors equal and woul...

Hedgerow as an obstacle and hindrance to movement

Here we go with another question from our first real battle and it concerns the effects of crossing and fighting across a hedgerow. I know that this has been mentioned here before but I still have a few questions. We had the hedgerow, which is fairly substantial, classed as a linear obstacle. On pag...

Shooting at Artillery with Supporting BG

Here I have my second question from our first real battle. Sorry if I go on a bit! I will try to make this a bit less woffly! This is what I, as umpire, ruled. In the case of a pike and shot BG giving rear support to artillery if the artillery is shot at the artillery take the hits and lose cohesion...

Medium Foot Defending Village against Foot

After a few 'rehearsal skirmishes' to get used to the rules our group finally had our first full pitched battle last weekend. I was given the task of umpiring and I came across a couple of situations that I couldn't resolve to the player's satisfaction. I will post them as separate questions so that...

Thanks for the replies. My interest is more or less only in the ECW so of course my BGs of foote are only two ranks deep. I see now that if they were in the deeper formations specified in other lists then the artillery would get an extra plus. One other thing though. If the Horse got there quicker a...

Artillery vs Mounted vs Artillery vs Foot

I was just musing on the effectiveness of artillery and noted that they get a minus factor when shooting at foote but not at mounted. In my (admittedly inexpert) mind I always thought that artillery would be more effective against closely packed, slow moving bodies of foote troops rather than agains...

Thanks for the explanation(s).

I take it that this also means that Cavaliers and Horse armed with impact pistol are not actually counted as impact troops either.

The massacre of 1600 defenders and civilians by Prince Rupert at Bolton is hardly ever mentioned. This is not as bad as Drogheda of course, where casualties were twice as many, but a massacre of civilians is a massacre of civilians. He carried out similar actions at various other locations, Birmingh...

Impact Pike?

Sorry about this! Another question! Do troops armed with pike count as impact foot? In the ECW starter lists in the FOGR rulebook they are listed merely as having 'pike' so I assumed that they don't count as impact troops. In the combat example on page 133 this would appear to be the case as the Dut...

I would like to add my voice for those who are requesting this somewhere. I would say that the FOGR book, in terms of production quality alone alone, is the 'nicest' wargame rule book I have ever had and I have had a fair few! It is a lovely boook. Therefore I don't want to ruin the appendix pages b...

Ahh yes! I see it buried in there now... The BG could only move twice as an individual BG if a commander is with it and it hadn't moved as part of a division whereas if moving by division all of the BGs in the division move twice. Think I've got it. Thanks for the lightning fast replies!

Movement by Division vs Movement by Battlegroup

I am currently on my 4th re-read of the FOGR rules and I can't seem to find any specific rules for moving single battlegroups. It would appear that there are no restrictions on how many individual battle groups can move or what they can do outside of the restrictions of the CMT. I am sure I am missi...
