Re: assaulting and wheeling
graym, I fought this battle more than a year ago and lost. I believed (and still believe) that the RAW require a charging unit to wheel so as to intersect some part of a target unit with a line extended perpendicular to the center of it's front edge. This view was categorically, if not unanimously r...

Re: Borodino Assault Group - Aggressive List?
Just what does "should" signify then? I think you give the authors far too much credit in thinking this subtle variation between "should" and "must" in terminology is anything more than the hasty and sloppy copy editing that afflict these otherwise excellent rules throu...

Stop this tendency before you ruin the whole thing.

Re: Artillery retire to 3 MU
retiring to 3mu isnt an outcome move, but in outcome moves if you move euqla or greater than you regular move you face the other way, 3MU is greater than the 2mU move, if was an outcome you would face the other way, an outcome of greater than 3mu I would say the artillery would limber (3mu is 50% m...

Re: Extended line and unreformed
The only real problem with extended line is the die units lose on some dice rolls when in this formation. This probably is justified for reformed armies accustomed to maneuvering in column, and arguably for all armes post-1807 or so, but should not apply to unreformed armies < 1807 or to British foo...

Re: Extended line and unreformed - Elephant in the room
Looking at the overall position you posit , so the reformed French advance on the British who are posted in extended line and in defensive postures in rough or even difficult terrain .Rough terrain makes the French fire and fight at a cohesion level lower so either not re-rolling ones if vets and r...

Bob,
I'm bringing my Papal Italian States in 25mm (650 points) so I hope you're bringing your Tudors. Grudge match.

Re: Genral options
Charismatic is always worth the 10 points - if you have them. As a rookie, I used to flank march with a cavalry division; now I never do so. Cavalry is too useful on-table, and the arrival of flank marchers still a bit chancy. The only time I use an exceptional divisional commander is with my Spring...

Re: Source for comparison of Generals?
I would never choose to be a defender even with a defensive posture. having control of the initiative for the first two turns is powerful. Potentially too much so. Maybe Dan, and on the whole you know I agree. But try attacking with a Spring 1813 French army against anything with more than a max of...

Re: Source for comparison of Generals?
The effect of Corps Commanders on initiative rolls needs some tweaking IMHO. As it now stands, an exceptional Corps Commander invariably wins initiative and must attack. This arguably correctly reflects a Napoleon in charge; but what about a Messina? Or a Davout? Or a Wellington? We think better qua...

Re: Attachment Limits
Do they have to be bought per division though? As in, say I can buy an officer attachment per division and I only buy one, can it be put in any division when it's time to allocate it? As far as I remember, only if you are running an Anglo-Portuguese Corps in the Peninsula. Their attachments must ad...

Re: Fall-in Planning Nov 7-9
Dan, I'm in favor of anything that emphasizes the "historical" in historical miniatures wargaming. I want to see a lot of good, historical games. Attracting new/additional players ought to be our goal at this stage. Whether or not you want to call it a tournament doesn't really concern me....

Re: Line of Sight and Firing
Let’s clear up a number of things 1. Re what is says in FOG( R) .The rules writers for the different FOG miniatures rules are not a single team and do not and did not collaborate together across the three sets and most are not ( so far as I know ) members of Slitherine . Most ( all ?) of us were co...

Re: Line of Sight and Firing
The problem with this aspect of the rules is that we are substituting implied meaning for explicit statement. Page 48 lists three conditions for a unit to be eligible to fire: 1) Type-Infantry, Artillery, and artillery attachments 2) Within range- a measure of distance 3) Condition- It must not hav...

"But for the few specific terrain effects discussions on pp. 95-97, nowhere does it say what effect a line of sight has on the ability of a unit to shoot. Hence my original questions. Is this omission deliberate, or just another example of sloppy copy editing? As I have said, I've already found...

Re: Defender Decalring Assault in 1st Two Turns
Easily solved :-). If the defender deploys within 10MU of the base line it is not possible to shoot at them with musketry in the first two turns. Exactly. I think the key to effective defensive deployment is to set up well back from center line, make use of off-table reserve option, and deploy on-t...
