I think you will see more scenarios in each location when they make a grand campaign. This was just the first release and base game. It is comparable to the original Panzer Corps. There will be more coming.

Agreed and sometimes I get caught out but usually the gains reaped by being able to jump rivers outweighs the losses.

Being able to cross rivers completely changes my game style and is one of the ones I choose first each time, not because it is the best (powerful) but because it makes the game much more about mobile warfare which I enjoy.

Using camo options really helps. I just make fighters black/red, tac bombers black/blue, and strat bombers tan/blue. It is easy to find and identify them then. Still looking at the AI planes can take a bit to identify them correctly unless I hover over them.

Some units are set to guard a specific area or hex. If they are not triggered they will continue to do so no matter the situation elsewhere.
