Feudal Pikemen unit

I found these guys in the scenario editor. Dismounted armoured cavalry in a pike formation. Are these a cut unit? I can't find them in any army list.

Re: A few questions about FoG II

Ai fights its melees from most advantaged to least advantaged. In P&S non-light cavalry stand and eat charges where they are disadvantaged. In FOG2 many will evade, pulling your attacking troops along behind them. You will often find your lancers partially surrounded by enemy horse after their c...

Re: PoA modifier vs Disruption?

I'm pretty sure it works something like this:

Javelins:

50 (arbitrary number) x 1.32 = 66

66 x 0.74 = 48.84 final score.

Archers:

50 (arbitrary number) final score.

Archers have a higher final score.

Re: Bows and slings

First I must admit that, in terms of playing this game, I like the current system that distinguishes ranges/accuracy depending on the unit/weapons (slings, infantry bows, mounted bows), whatever its actual historicity. That said, while I've never shot with a sling nor a bow and while I read a coupl...

Units fighting across each other

Ran into a situation where some units are fighting through each other's engagements. https://i.imgur.com/eX87DMm.jpg Cavalry is fighting irregular foot across the superior warband/spearmen engagement. Unfortunately I don't have a save handy. The superior warband and the cavalry were both pursuing a ...

Re: Fiction Book Recommendations

Something a little different: The High Crusade by Poul Anderson is a short, fun pulpy novel about 14th century Englishman who slaughter an alien scoutship's crew and go on to embroil themselves in an intergalactic war. I thought it was surprisingly well written given the premise.

Re: FoG II Terrain for Medieval! (UPDATED 2/6/2021) 9:30AM

Denser cattails would be more realistic for marshland. I work at a big wetland area and we have had to take drastic measures a few times in the last few decades to control plant growth (localized draining, dredging). At the density you have it the water level would be deep enough that it would be ba...

Re: My Top Ten Units

Not necessarily the most effective units but some of the ones I am fond of. 1) Well armed slaves/poorly armed slaves. I'm counting these as one unit "package" since you always get them together. Can't help but root for the underdogs. Well armed slaves in particular are simultaneously frust...

Concerns about AI pathing for undrilled infantry

As far as I can tell, the AI is able to path its undrilled heavy foot in ways unavailable to the player. In the two screenshots I have attached (I am the vikings), showing the position at the end of my turn and then the position at the start of my next turn after the AI has moved, the AI has split i...

Re: Infantry charging heavy cavalry?

Apologies for the Necro. I went and read "The End of the Bronze Age" . While the author keeps calling the non close order, javelin swordsmen who he claims defeated chariot armies "skirmishers", upon closer inspection these are not light foot skirmishers at all. In game, these se...

Re: Infantry charging heavy cavalry?

Xenophon has a body of peltasts badly beating up Tisaphernes' horse Cunaxa. I recently read Robert Drews' book on the bronze age collapse, where his thesis is that the end of massed chariot warfare came about when they were completely outmatched by clouds of aggressive skirmishers who would shower ...

Re: Bug?

There is definitely something unintuitive about the movement costs. That levy skirmisher can do a "knight move" forward and over a square and finish with 2AP, and still be able to turn 360 degrees any direction it pleases, but a single diagonal has the aforementioned result.

Also getting this error on steam.

Having played through a Pyrrhus v Romans campaign recently, my experience with fielding large numbers of regular and raw pikes reminds me of Zapp Brannigan from Futurama shouting "stop exploding you cowards!" as his army is obliterated.

Re: This is why it is hard to play even the best RTW2 mods!!!

Still, I pretty regularly play Fourth Age Total War, a Rome 1 mod. FATW is so good. Have you seen the Wainriders expansion they are working on? Its moving to the Alexander engine and set during the Third Age 1500 years or so prior to the book events. The factions in FATW minus the elves and orcs an...
