I too find Magnesia/Syrian War a very tough battle on very hard., much harder than Dog Heads. I've tried in two different ways (several times each) with unsatisfying results. Mind you I eventually won, but only in the ugliest of ways.

My force is without screening troops, no velites, no skirmishers ...

I've handled most every other scenario with out skirmishers, but this may be the one that really requires them for a clean victory.

I would love to see sequels expand the storyline elements of the game with more decision forks and possibilities. Hannibal has a potent force here, spread out in his classic weak center, strong flanks deployment. My strategy has been to try to be sure the bulk of the battle happens on the ridge, where Hannibal's best troops will be at a disadvantage, particularly his cavalry.

My approach is closer to your second strategy. I divide my army into 4 columns. 3 aux charge down the ridge line in a single column, take out the berserkers, and then occupy the highlands.

I am on a MAC so I believe the online portion of the game runs on a different server unfortunately. It you buy LA or Great Battles of Rome? You might find more people playing online over there. I'm not sure if the LA online and GBR are compatible.
