Re: Mounted troops vs Infantry
30+ years of Wargames Research Group romantic over-estimation of mounted troops over infantry has made most people in our community believe that this is realistic. I wonder how all these mounted armies will do against hussites. If infantry armies always have to loose against mounted, they themselve...

Today I got the new rules Warlord by Trevor Halsall Just came out and at first look looks somehow similar to warhammer or the WRG 6th edition. I will read them in the next days, but it seem that its again a complex rules set with many pages so maybe AoW should be easy to play in a short time. New ru...

I have managed to keep a BG of enemy knights out of play for half a game with some skirmishers simply because the knights kept on failing the maneuver test they needed to turn and move away. Obviously in that case my skirmishers were doing a good job :) Hammy good to hear. I think new orders for su...

Re: Friction of war
I agree that most ancients rules--indeed, most wargaming rules in any period--give commanders far too much control over what their troops are doing on the table top for strict historical accuracy. But . . . that extra control makes for a far better game. Being able to redeploy one's troops after th...

KRIEGSSPIEL computer game?
I am wondering wether there will be a "Kriegsspiel" Computer game once. I guess most of you do not know what I mean by this. You have to play the original Kriegspiel (v. Reisswitz) to understand the difference between a Kriegsspiel and a wargame. Kriegsspiel is a kind of tabletop wargame w...

Friction of war
I do not have the beta rules and battle reports are quite short, so my question is: Is there any kind of friction of war in the command system? I do not think of troops just getting impetus or flee. My experience is that most of the rules give the C-C the universal command abilities. They are able t...

Re: AoW versus WRG - thoughts of a long-in-tppth wargamer
you did not remove figures in 7th. You took fatigue points. Yeah I remember. My Samurai charged evading enemies until they died of fatigue horrible rules set I played many rules and each had some good elements and some bad. WRG 6th edition was a heroic system. I loved that feeling of having a good ...

I can safely say that Art of War is NOT written in Barkereese, it is written in normal understandable english. It will also have a lot of handy diagrams. The downside of this is it will have more pages than DBM. I also believe that the rules will be translated into many of the major european langua...

I used BG's of 8 pike which had an interesting and unxepected bonus (I had not used Swiss in AoW prior to the comp) that when a 2 wide 4 deep block of pike turns 90 degrees it is still a 2 wide 4 deep block. This had the effect of making isolated blocks of pike feel like squares that with a good ma...

I doubt any wargame will ever adequately represent the Swiss at war -- they make unit movement far too responsive to the wishes of the player. By the way, the Swiss halberdiers in the later (pike-predominant) period would either be the entire block of close fighters in the command, or, far more lik...
