anyways, on a more serious note, I do find it interesting that knights only fight in one rank. Why is that? Because they fought in shallower formations than Ancient cavalry, cataphracts included. Cataphracts are very good against contemporary opponents. They are disadvantaged in anachronistic (fant...

shooting enemies do not immediately instill a burning desire to run at them screaming, regardless of my own safety, orders, or sense. No they don't. Its a game mechanism that is perhaps simplified. But, IMO, in most cases valid. Then we will agree to disagree, I suppose. I think it's an oversimplif...

Re: what's next?
What's next in the rules pipeline? We've got ancients and ren. coming soon. Napoleonics maybe next year. Are there any plans for other rules sets? ACW, WW2...? Mike "My tank is a POA up on yours because when fighting in four ranks I get HEAT barrage!" "Nu-uh! I have reactive armor, w...

You would probably be killed by your own men then. If I was commanding a Spartan battlegroup (2000 men, assuming eight bases) then 1900 of them wouldn't notice the 10 dead guys, and there's a good chance I wouldn't either. The Spartans and to some extent the Romans would also have the discipline to...

If I was a disciplined soldier and saw enemy shooting kill maybe 10 people while we marched forwards, I would point, laugh, You would probably be killed by your own men then. If I was commanding a Spartan battlegroup (2000 men, assuming eight bases) then 1900 of them wouldn't notice the 10 dead guy...

My simple question still lies unanswered : what is the material fact that makes KN so different of other lancers of other elite units that dominated their own era , that won may battles, that charged infantry as they did, that charged lance against lance ? It looks right. I disagree. I think it loo...

They would do it like the Spartans did against the Athenian lights who in the end defeated the Spartans without any Athenian Hopilites, just by waring them down with javilins and arrows. If you recieve casulties and can't give any back you will try and close with the lights to stop the shooting tha...

Alexandrian Macedonian
I have learned to play FoG with a early Armored Spartan army, and am thinking about graduating to Alexandrian Macedonian. But, I have some questions: 1) Can a pike-centric army be good? Say, lots and lots (4 to 6 battlegroups of 10 or 12 pike bases) be good? 2) Obviously, I would mix this army with ...

Well, seems like I was totally wrong! Still, from what it seems to me, skirmishers are too powerful. I always thought that skirmishing was done just as a prelude to the main contact of battle-lines, and it seems to me that this is generally true aside from a couple of (notable) exceptions. This isn'...

I play Classical Greece, so take the following cum grano salis : I would like to see light horse and light foot not be invulnerable. As it stands, with heavy infantry, the enemy will move to within 2, javelin me, force me to charge on my activation, then evade up to six inches. In all of my games (a...

Pre-Macedonian Phalanx Question: Spear posture
I just recently acquired a dory and an aspis for reenacting, and I don't want to look like an idiot out there on the first day. (The rest of my panoply is being borrowed for now). My main question is how the hoplites in a Classical (480 BC or so) phalanx hold their spears? Ancient artwork almost uni...

Alright, having added up the points and ensured legality, here is my 800 pts. army: Inspired Commander Troop Commander (2x) BG of six bases: Spartan Citizens: Heavy Foot, Armored, Superior, Drilled, Offensive Spear (2x) BG of eight bases: Spartan Perioikoi: Heavy Foot, Armored, Average, Drilled, Off...

So would this army perform well: (it's only a theoretical one, I haven't added up the points yet.) Say, two battlegroups of Spartans (Armored, Superior, Drilled, offensive spear) then four battlegroups of Periokoi (Armored, average, drilled, offensive spear) four to six battlegroups of generic hopli...

I think Graham's analysis is pretty solid, so I won't bother repeating it. I will emphasize one point, though, about the light foot. A solid line of steady spears is an unpleasant sight for most opponents, and so you will often see a strategy of opponents using their light foot to tempt your BGs in...

New Player: Classical Greece
Hello everyone! I'm Paul, from Austin, Texas US. I am just getting into Field of Glory and was going out to buy the books tomorrow, only because the game store closed before work ended today. With introductions out of the way, here is the questions. I am planning to play as Classical Greece, so bear...
