Re: What exactly were the "archers" in the late medieval French lance?
They were foot archers (a few of them foot crossbowmen) travelling on horseback and at some point during the 15th century or very early 16th century, the captains of their companies decided on occasion to equip them with demi-lances and use them and their horses as mounted scouts, skirmishers… Quit...

Analog pike and shot battles
Apologies if this is off topic, but there has been a lot of discussion on this board about an alternative style of art for P&S, one which would more closely resemble period engravings than P&S already does. I've been using this approach in my own wargame project, and thought some of you migh...

Re: Ottoman team event : Round 4
The Ottoman forces of Sedo Pasha defeat awesum's Imperial army at St. Gotthard in a bloody battle of attrition (36-64). Sedo's spahi's intercepted the charging cuirassiers on the Imperial right as they tried to ford the river, with the cavalry melee devolving into a indecisive stalemate. Meanwhile, ...

Re: Ottoman team event : Round 3
As soon as the snows melted in the spring of 1637, the Ottoman forces of Sedo Pasha advanced across the open plains of Hungary to confront their erstwhile Transylvanian vassals, led by the wily PanCalvus. Having read about the Swedish victory at Wittstock the previous year, the Transylvanians decide...

Re: Multiplayer Question
Hi Alex, I think it was I who accepted your challenge. I'm new to multiplayer, and wasn;t sure what you intended since the password was posted in the challenge notes. You can flag the game as abandoned if you like, or I would be happy to forfeit on Turn 1, but I would also be happy to play it out if...

Re: Armored Horse Archers
The following passages are from the Loeb translation of Ammianus, on the battle of Maranga. I'm not qualified to assess the quality of the translation, but it bears directly on this discussion: "Moreover, all the companies were clad in iron, and all parts of their bodies were covered with thick...

Re: Fog II and Pike and Shot II?
For what it's worth, I strongly prefer the Pike and Shot graphic style. If a theoretical P&S2 ever comes to fruition, I would support keeping the contemporary-style formation graphics, with additional "animations" to indicate unit states. i.e., pikes lowered to indicate a unit engaged ...

Re: The Kingdom of Kush as a future faction in FoG II
The Meroitic kingdom was at least as powerful as any of the contemporary northern European tribal confederations. I'm not sure if it counts as the "Rise of Rome" era, but in the early Imperial era (25 BC) a Roman force equivalent to two full legions was sent into the territory of Meroe to ...

Re: FoG II on Wine for Mac OS X?
Pixel, Can you confirm you can get multiplayer turns to load? I've had the same experience with P&S and SJ, where the game runs fine except for loading MP turns. If FOG2 gets around this issue, I just might pick up a copy.

Re: Naval Warfare: Lepanto 1571
Very, very cool, jomni. Looking through the notes, it seems like you've been through a number of iterations. Any chance of a v1.2 that differentiates the various galley types a little more? For instance the Maltese galleys would have likely had some of the heaviest boarding parties, while the Veneti...

Re: Highlighting tiles
Thanks Richard! I do have the modded textures in /DATA/UI/TEXTURES/BATTLE However, only a few seem to be displaying correctly. For instance, in deployment mode, the eligible deployment tiles are highlighted with the modded texture, and when I turn on the LOS/LOF function the modified versions displa...

Highlighting tiles
Does anyone know if it is possible to change the texture that is displayed when mousing over a tile (e.g., if I wanted to port the inkbrush square from SJ into P&S) in a modded campaign folder? I have altered the .dds files UI/Textures/Battle in a custom campaign folder, but when I load the camp...

I have been able to get both P&S and SJ running on a MacBook using WineSkin, though for whatever reason it cannot process multiplayer turns. So mp is off-limits, but everything else works perfectly.

Changes to Chinese lists in Mandate of Heaven?
Hello all, The review of Sengoku Jidai on the Great Ming Military blog generated an interesting discussion in the comments about potential (albeit fairly minor) inaccuracies in the portrayal of Chinese and other armies. Some of the more significant suggestions included a greater role for dismountabl...

Re: Verdict on the Series
I don't think there is a lack of research evident in the scenarios, maybe just the limitations of needing a manageable number of unit types, and so ignoring some finer distinctions. in my opinion it could be resolved by modding in "average" and "superior" morale variants of the I...

Re: Terrain Colors - All or Just for Snow?
I'd just like to belatedly add in that I love the period art style used in SJ. And would also love to see a P&S "era" done in fully monochrome style, like a contemporary engraving.

Re: Further Reading Online Resources
I've read the Ming blog quite a bit as well; it seems the author believes that various forms of brigandine and other light armor were quite widespread in Ming armies, even among rank-and-file infantry. I was surprised by the decision in SJ to portray virtually all Ming infantry as unarmored. Also, i...

Re: MP with Wine?
Thanks for the suggestion. I switched to the 1.6.2 build, but it doesn't seem to have helped (then again I'm not running the Steam version). Are ther any .dlls or configurations that you needed to adjust?
