FAQ - Feeding more bases into an existing melee

Post by madmike111 »

Read this in the FAQ -
Can a BG in close combat expand into contact with a new enemy BG?

Yes but only if either of the following circumstances apply:

-The new enemy BG was already fighting it as an overlap
-The contact does not result in the previously unengaged enemy BG entering close combat (the the expanding BG other than as an overlap)
I don't understand what is meant by the second bullet pt, 'The contact does not ...' Can someone explain it?

This is the scenario prompting it:

You are fighting an enemy overlapping you by a file on the right.

The enemy you are fighitng has an adjoining BG further on your right that advanced and turned in its move to face your flank, poised for a flank charge from one base width away.

You cleverly expand to the right to fight the overlapping enemy but at the same time putting your flank into a front edge Melee close combat situation with the intended flank chargers so they can't charge your flank but are simply in melee - saving you from a flank charge next turn.

BUT such an expansion is not allowed.

If the enemy had not advanced but simply remained in line with its friends, you could expand and the other enemy BG would fight as an overlap.

thanks for the explaination, I wouldn't have worked that out myself. Maybe next edition of the FAQ they could include that example as reading only the text its hard to understand what the situation is covering.

As it took a thread to thrash it out, it would take a chunk of space and only distract people from common and important matters. It is, however, provided for there in the event a similar situation arises again.
