30 Years War team event

Post by ahuyton »

Here is the programme

Each victory gives points to the Protestant/Rebel v Catholic/Habsburg struggle

Victory - 4 points to the winning side
Massacre (ie winning margin greater than 35%) - 2 points to losing side as bonus, reflecting horror spreading around Europe
Narrow victory (loser gets 50%+) - 1 bonus point to loser

Game One
Protestant Bohemian revolt against the Imperialist Catholics
Scenario - Battle of the White Mountain

Game Two
If the Catholic score exceeds the protestant then Danish intervention
Skirmish - Danes v Catholic League

Otherwise - German Protestants v Catholic League

Game Three
If the overall Catholic score exceeds the protestant then Swedish intervention
Scenario - 1st Breitenfeld

Otherwise - Imperial v later German Protestant

Game Four
If Game 3 was a skirmish then Rocroi
Otherwise a skirmish, later French v later Spanish

I realise that the last game is not strictly speaking religious in character so we simply change the scoring label to anti-Habsburgs v Habsburgs

Teams

The Revolting Alliance (Protestant, Anti-Imperial)
Kiwiwarlord (team captain)
G(d)od
ahuyton
Ebenezer
Gribol

The Habsburg Empire (Catholic, Imperial)
Awesum4 (team captain)
Lascar
Fybyyn
Smjohnso77
Tomoegozen
Snugglebunnies

Challenge on top of ole' white mountain issued for lascar We'll be the ones in berets, black polar necks and dark sunnies who are more than likely listening to some 60's tunes and clicking our fingers! Oops, wrong vibe... I've just received a letter from our illustrious leader;
...apparently we're the ones revolting against you repressive Hapsburgs who are not only taking away our religious rights previously granted to us by Rudolf II and Santa Claus but are calling us revolting...to the barricades!

What do you mean there's no barricades?

Excerpt of the Field report to Brian the Brain whilst fleeing from a field somewhere on white mountain
Having heard of ample supplies of Brockwurst in the enemy baggage train, I couldn't hold my revolting peasants back. On the way, they took out both enemy ordinances, two Catholic Tercio's and and several cavalry units. Alas, the casualties were just too horrendous. Limbs lay about like branches on the ground after a fierce storm in the black forest. Nevertheless, what a tale to tell and the fervor of the initial peasant uncontrolled advance was certainly a sight to behold.

I'm uncertain whether many made it to the enemy train but from the vantage of our hill we saw four units disappearing toward the distant forests. On the plus side we don't have to pay the mercenaries.

Your humble servant
Post-script
Survivors report that the last turn was horrendous with Catholics in an uncontrolled religious fervor intent on slaughter. A enemy Kuirassier unit flanking our entire melee line made short work of almost every single hapless horsemen. (the few that survived recounted visions of demon riders of the apocalypse harvesting souls and tearing limbs asunder whilst gorging themselves on the flesh of our comrades). At the same time, the rest of the frenzied Catholic demon horde continued to revel in the carnage from their pursuit of many other units as our demoralized comrades threw away their makeshift weapons and fled in terror)

ahuyton (Bohemians) played against fybyyn (Imperialists), winning 42-13 (Battle of the White Mountain)

I gave my troops strict instructions,
- go all out to kill the papists: if we can get them to 42% losses then it is an auto victory,
- listen devotedly to the bible readings (newly translated from the Latin into our barbarous Czech tongue) and
- roll lots of sixes on the dice.

Fabien charged aggressively with his cavalry in a first wave and advanced the keils in a second wave. I was less courageous. My infantry formed a nice firing line on the hill while my cavalry dashed off to the flanks. It was one of those days when you know the dice are with you. In just three shots, my left hand artillery destroyed a unit of cuirassiers. Heartened by this, the hussars and arkubusiers outflanked and tormented the enemy cavalry. On approach, I disrupted one keil and engaged it and after a couple of turns routed it. The remaining keils engaged and I could have been in trouble. Happily, by then I had managed to rout most of the remaining cavalry and guns and so the Austrians gracefully retired from the field.

As always with Fabien, it was a friendly game and I felt a bit heartless in chasing off his cavalry so brutally. But we will play again, Fabien has a good grasp of the strategic game and just needs to get more familiar with how the units interact, and that takes some time.

The Catholic (Lascar) vs Bohemian (GDod) White Mountain victory was 64 to 25.
The Bohemian cavalry was quite aggressive on both flanks but I pushed forward with a Schwerpunkt of Tercios
through the Bohemian center and that proved to be irresistible and decisive.

Round 1 White Mountain Result
KiwiWarlord's Bohemians, 55%, defeat Awesum4's Papists, 60%,

The Bohemians stuck to the plan as discussed amongst the Bohemian Generals when news of the attack was imminent and it worked well.
The battle, which lasted 16 turns, began with the Bohemians sitting on the hill awaiting the Papists onslaught whilst firing artillery and causing some damage as the great lumbering Tercio Keils advanced with some Kurassiers in support, towards the Bohemian Tercios sitting atop White Mountain whilst the Papist Cavalry advanced on both Flanks to engage the Bohemian low grade rabble Transylvanian Hussars.
The Bohemian Right Wing held and broke several Papists Tercios whilst the Hussars supporting them in and around the walled enclosure, held on long enough so as the Papist Tercios could be pursued to prevent them rallying, and the Papist Artillery overrun.
Meanwhile the Bohemian Left Wing Cavalry withstood the onslaught and defeated most of the attacking Papist Cavalry with the support of two Tercios and an Artillery battery within Fortifications. The Papist's massed Tercio Keils battered their way through the Bohemian Centre routing most of the Bohemian Tercios but were just a little too late as the rest of the Papists were running away.
A hard fought very tough battle.

Brian played this very well, co-ordinating his various troops so extra firepower on the flanks of my tercios broke them before contact. He also used his larger number of mounted to overcome my definite advantage in quality.

Re: 30 Years War team event - ROUND TWO

Post by ahuyton »

Time to launch Round Two.

The current score is as follows:

Protestants/Anti-Imperialists - 10
Catholics/Habsburgs - 5

We are awaiting the outcome of the game between Fybyyn and Ebenezer and I hope that they can soon finish but whatever the oucome of the Ebenezer/Fybyyn struggle we will play with the following armies:

German Protestant 1618-31 v Catholic League 1619-32 (Christian IV of Denmark sees no reason to intervene in the conflict given the successes of the Bohemians. So now it is for Tilly and Catholic forces to reverse the trends.)

Could Awesum4 and his team please launch the game (large, wide, agricultural terrain, open battle) as follows please. Games to be completed by 12 July at the latest.

Awesum4 v Gdod
Lascar v ahuyton
Fybyyn v Ebenezer
SMSJohnso77 v Kiwiwarlord
Tomoegozen v Gribol
Snugglebunnies v okie

Good luck and, most importantly, have fun.

Dave, I am happy that you are interested. Yes, will be happy to include you in the future and if any vacancies arise now. If we can find another player then I can already add you to the teams.

Round 2 Result

Kiwiwarlord's 16,000 German Protestants, 21%, defeat SMSJohnso77's 15,000 Catholic League, 48%

Most of the action took part in this area of the battlefield, I kept the Catholic Tercio Keils at bay long enough to break just about everything else of the Catholic League's army.
This screen shot is just before the end of the last move.

A modest prayer in celebration of the divine's justice I feel Brian. We will continue our fast until all the papists are hurled back in to the abyss whence they came!

Yes that would be great. Maybe you can play against Dave in the second round?
If you take the Protestants and Dave takes the Catholics (see above for the exact details)?

I will inform the two captains if you are both agreeable to this.
