Rendering issue with water tiles

Post by mk53v3n »

Hi guys,

I just recently started playing OOB. I really like the game so far, but I immediately noticed a strange and very annoying rendering issue with water tiles:

I always see a clearly visible "area" - some kind of strangely formed "view cone" - when moving the camera over water tiles. This area is only visible when playing with "3D World Map". It's not there when playing with "2D World Map" or "3D Tactical Map".

For the most part, the water is rendered quite beautifully, with lots of details and reflections. However, outside that area, the water has a slightly different color and it seems is rendered with less detail, e.g. less sunlight reflections.
The area has quite sharp borders left and right. Furthermore, the inside of the area also has "spots" where some parts of the water tiles are also rendered in less detail. So it's not really a homogeneous area, but it looks more like "clouds" where some parts of the water is rendered in full detail and some parts are not.
It's quite difficult to describe, but it's clearly visible all the time, especially when scrolling the camera.

This rendering issue only affects water tiles. There are no issues with land tiles.

Although it's clearly visible on the following screenshots (I've marked the boundaries of the area with red lines to even better illustrate the issue), it's much more visible in the live game when scrolling the camera.

Finally, a few details about my system: I'm playing the latest version of the game, 8.4.1. I'm on Windows 10 with a 21:9 widescreen, the resolution is 2560 x 1080 and I'm using a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 with up-to-date drivers.

Any help with this rendering issue would really be appreciated. It's much more noticeable in the live game when scrolling than it is on these static screenshots and therefore it is really annoying and absolutely spoils the fun of scenarios with large water surfaces. I really hope there is a fix for this.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Has really no one an idea how to fix this issue? Unfortunately I bought the Pacific Pack as my first content pack, so most of the maps consist of huge water areas. This graphics issue is so annoying, almost killing all the fun in large navy battles... ;(

Some of us have no graphic issues with neither shallow or deep water hexes... (and I have designed a lot of naval scenarios for what it is worth).
Sorry about your problems, but it may be that this is linked to outdated graphic drivers or something else on your end.

Thank you very much for your reply. So it does not really seem to be a common problem.
Hmmm... my graphic drivers are up to date, so that should not be the issue.

But I guess I have indeed some rather unusual components / settings - I play on a widescreen monitor (21:9) with a resolution of 2560 x 1080. I guess that's not necessarily the most common configuration.
Maybe that has something to do with it.

I will try a different monitor with a different resolution, maybe play around with disabling GSync, and see how that works.

The resolution itself should not pose a problem.
I play on a 3840x2160 monitor.

I finally identified the problem!

It had indeed nothing to do with the resolution or my monitor. It seems to be directly related to the "Render Quality" setting under "Options -> Performance" in OOB:

Image

I always had the render quality set to "Highest", because I have quite a powerful machine and graphics card. This seems to have caused the nasty graphics bug when rendering water tiles:

Image

When I reduce the Render Quality setting to "Good", the rendering issue is gone and everything looks fine (but a little bit less detailed of course):

Image

The issue only occurs when setting the Render Quality to anything above "Good", i.e. to either "High" or "Highest".

Of course, I immediately started experimenting with the graphics settings as soon as I noticed the issue, and I would have found the reason for this earlier if it weren't for the following catch: Although the changes in render quality take effect immediately in-game, the graphics issue does only appear after either restarting the game or at least returning to the main menu and reloading a savegame. The game tells you to restart after changing certain other options, but not after changing the render quality. That's why I never realized that this specific option caused the problem...

Hopefully the support team or the devs read this thread and will fix this annoying bug in the future.

Until then, I will use the following workaround:

- Start the game
- Make sure that "Render Quality" is set to "Good" or lower
- Load my savegame
- Increase the "Render Quality" to "Highest"

This way I can avoid the graphics bug while still enjoying the more detailed graphics.
