"Relinquish Objective" not possible with allies?

"Relinquish Objective" not possible with allies?

I was assigned an objective to conquer an ally's region. They are a good buffer for me and I like having them as an ally, so I tried relinquishing the objective via diplomacy but it is greyed out and won't let me do it :(

I can do it with enemies and neutral parties but not allies?
