Achaemenid question

Post by casang »

Do you think i could get away with useing Xyston's Achaemenid range as the first of the two lists in I.F. I have checked with a few other companys and the figures are awful any suggestions would be most welcome.......Carl

These are my Chariot minis E.A.P. You may have seen some of them in Magister Militum web page, but they do improve when you have them in your hands. I´m not a very good painter, but I´m very proud of my first rank of Immortals, ´cause the mini in the online store did not look very well, but now it does, (at least for my taste).

I think Xyston should work fine. Remember, Early Achaemenid Iranian infantry are all archers. Units of all bowmen, perhaps with propped up shields in front should work well. And I believe their is representation of this in Greek art. If you are interested Donnington makes seperate rectangular wicker shields.

Despite the fact that Essex and Chariot make EAP figures, I too am not happy with the choices available in 15mm. I thought there was talk of Khurasan doing a range, but I have heard nothing recently.

I recently did a comparison of Essex and Xyston minis in their macedonian ranges and will be going with Xyston.
The minis are much more detailed and at least for the Macedonian range they have more poses. They are slightly larger, probably more 16-17mm. So if your planning on mixing them with our manufacturers it may look a bit odd.

Hi Carl,
I have these two lists with only Xyston figures. They are great (in particularly Satrapal Guard and Persian dressed infantry) and the range is the best in my opinion, compared for example with Essex one.
I made the same for Greek and Macedonian armies.

Yes you can. MY EAP from Xyston consists of:

Scythian Horse archers
Parthian Horse Archers
Indian Foot
Bactrian Foot (Persian Levies in Eastern Dress with uniform painted brown and crescent shields)
Spara bara Infantry (1/2 Persian Archers and 1/2 Persian levies in median dress with oblong whicker shields)
Immortals (Persian levies in either Persian or Eastern Dress with uniform in bright colours and oblong whicker shields)
Persian Cavalry (you can take your pick from the range available)
Hoplites (ditto)
Guard cavalry
Commanders

Oblong whicker shields you would have to get from Magister Militum or Donnington. If you want camesl several people do them but not Xyston. If you want javelinners the best range is probably else whre too.
