Lines of death

Post by PoorOldSpike »

Random Skirmish battle using Paul59's Enhanced Skirmish mod

1- I'm the Russian defender in 1944 and my 4 teeth are an SU-85 tank destroyer, a T-34 (76mm), an 85mm AA/AT gun and a 76mm gun.
I deploy them as shown to set up 'lines of death' (red lines) covering the kill zone (yellow ellipse).
Notice the red squares which denote my units lines of sight, it's a feature of BA2 which I like because it means we can play as if on a chessboard to allow precise positioning.
The enemy will be coming down the blue arrow and I plan to destroy him one by one with side armour shots as he enters the kill zone as if on a conveyor belt-

2- First blood to me, my boys trash his leading echelon of light vehicles as easy as swatting a swarm of flies-
Also note the 2x Kingtigers and 2x Stugs which are following up in the background, they can't fire at my boys until they enter the kill zone and get LOS. It works both ways of course, because I can't see him either til he enters the zone-

3- Uh-oh I'm getting a bad feeling because he's deployed that big 150mm gun (blue circle)
His Ktigs and Stugs still can't see me because they don't have LOS, but arty doesn't need LOS (gulp)..

4- Ouch that hurts, the 150 begins shelling the wood and my units begin crumbling..

5- People are on the pitch, they think it's all over!
Yep, it's over, a couple of my boys pull themselves together and fire a few shots at the panzer spearhead but the shots just bounce off and the Kingtigers return fire, wiping out my poor boys so I surrender on turn 11 of 22 and go off to pout and sulk.

Summary- his 150 gun won it for him dropping shells on my boys in the wood, and I had no arty of my own to do counter-battery fire on the 150, but that's the nature of Random battles, you never know what you're gonna get given you by high command, I had a Sturmovik but the 150 had mauled my boys before I could get it into action but hey, that's war..:)

PS- for the record this was my initial deployment (below), my infantry were deployed in four lines (red rectangles), most of them being on the far right to protect the flag over there against enemy infantry advancing through the forest, and also to throw AT charges at any German tanks trying to sneak through the small gap there.
In the event, the Germans concentrated all their strength on the left.
As a matter of interest, would forum members have deployed differently?
