Here is the sound of celtic horn. I have seen this ancient music instrument in B class movie, "Druids".
Though, movie is B class, I like Caesar to some extent.

Nice site and sound of the carnyx and the first time I have heard one. Similar to the sound of the Japanese war horns no doubt, the Jewish war horn, and others.

Imagine being with the Romans at Lake Trasimene or in that other ambush that occured just after Cannae, in the fog and/or forest, and then all of a sudden you hear all those eerie horns blowing and then the shouting of the enemy troops. Oops. Screwed-up again, maybe permanently this time.

I have the Middle Earth mod for medieval TW, and there is a great horn that sounds when you end your turn, at least I think that is when it sounds because I haven't fiddled with the game in a few weeks.

Brrreerrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! Berreerreerrrrrrrr!!!!

The movie 'The Vikings' has a great horn in it, and maybe smaller ones too if I remember correctly.

Berrrrerrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! Phrttprittttfrat!!! (just got hit with a spear, so sorry)

About horns, was swiss horn a war-horn too???? I saw one of them when I went to Switzerland...back in 1988

Here, in Basque Country, horns were merely used as communication devices (lots of valleys here), they weren't specific war-related. Maybe they're somewhat related to Carnyx, because basque are loosely related to celts.

Hi Duncan,

I think everyone used horns for war: signalling and to help encourage your troops and frighten the enemy.

BTW, that spear is still stuck through me, makes it a pain to sit or lie down, and I am afraid to pull it out because then I will leak.
