Best Army Composition

Post by polkad »

Hi All!

What a great game!!! Im from games like EuIV or HOI of Paradox but never could love games of Rome Era from them. The total war series is ok but, still arcade game.

FOGE is the perfect game beteween Civilization and Paradox Games in Rome era. The only weak point is the diplo options that you can´t create protectorates after a war or military access.

I need some advice for army composition, what is the best?

Now im creating the army in this way:

5 HI ( Legions ) , 10 Alae, 10-15 Skirmish, 5 Skirmish CAV, 3 Heavy cavlary and 6 cavalry . Is that OK?

Thanks in advance.

it really depends.

You want enough to fill out the battle line on a plain, so at least 4 cavalry and your ideal army will change as the game develops.

With Rome, for say the first 100 or so turns, I've gone to

4-4-4-4

ie 4 legions + 4 alae + 4 velites + 4 cavalry

Once I have access to mediums, I tend to 6 cavalry (4 medium, 2 lights). A few more velites don't hurt. Obv I replace the mediums with heavy cavalry once they are available.

Once my economy picks up, I create a second 4/4/4/4 army and then I can start to campaign outside Italy (keeping 1 back).

A bit later, you may end having to fight the Antiochids and they can produce very large armies. I'd go to 6/6/6/6.

What I'm trying for is flexibility and keeping the cost down (legions are expensive).

This will work post the Marian reforms, but once you have the Imperial reform you'll need to get your light troops from provincial unit types - but you do get the very nice armoured archers.
