Learned the hard way to save campaign start

Post by Nethog »

I was immensely enjoying my first campaign in OOB (Winter War) and was already in my 3rd (or 4?) scenario and decided to bump up the difficulty one level. I had difficulty beating the last scenario and restarted once thinking I could change the difficulty, but noticed I couldn't but I went ahead and kept playing anyway. I did notice however I could open the save file [Winter War] (Campaign) and change the difficulty level, so I figured if I lost the current scenario again I would use this save file. Well I failed again and didn't select Restart since I planned to load the [Winter War] (Campaign) save file - but when I opened it I was shocked to see it was overwritten and just stated I lost! :( Surely the dev's didn't intend this did they? In my opinion the game should autosave a campaign save file that can be used to restart the last scenario AND allow you to change the difficulty level. At this point I don't know if I want to replay the Campaign from the beginning again or just go back to playing Stellaris! :D

It pays to go into the saves file and manually edit the file names of saves that you wish to keep as you progress. The game will recreate the default save files as needed.

Auto-save is auto-save and when you finished the current scenario, the game is programmed to update the campaign save file accordingly. The apparatus is really there only in case of a crash but manually saved files are worth the time and effort; I do so anytime I am playing a campaign.

Cheating? Not really. Not in my case, in any event. I don't look at the game and at campaigns as a "do or die" struggle; I see it more as a progression to accomplishment.

I always produce following saves (for every scenario):

- campaign map (before scenario)
- before deployment (deployment phase)
- after deployment (deployment phase)
- after upgrade / purchase (deployment phase)
- at the start of the scenario (turn 1)
- just before completing victory condition (at the end of scenario)
- game replay

It really pays off :D .

Hi,

That does NOT sound like correct operations! We'll investigate

Thanks for letting us know

Yeah, okay, there's only one campaign save, but that's not a problem anymore since the autosave every turn function's been implemented IMO.

We're probably going to add a second campaign autosave for this kind of circumstance. It feels unkind to the player at the moment

Agree with you, with Autosave activated no problemo.
There is only one Campaign save but you can always load the last [Turn End] of any scenario if Autosave activated and you get to the campaign map directly :

Yeah, but not everyone plays with that setting turned on.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against separate campaign saves, actually I'd welcome it. But I think there are more important matters to attend to right now than this. After the game looks and works as it did "pre-841" with the new UI, then it's time for stuff like this.

Oh, yes, this isn't a top priority, but if we don't investigate and log these things then they get forgotten :)
