Question for Developers - on 'map painting', decadence etc
I hadn't come across the term 'map painting' until a recent discussion on something I posted last week, when this very useful phrase was used to describe the approach of less realistic games than Empires. Now, I can see that Empires represents a more subtle, challenging game than we would have without the impact of the decadence mechanism. But I'm wondering, for those of us simple souls who actually enjoy 'map painting' (!!!), if the game developers might consider a future change that allowed players to tone down the impact of the decadence mechanism in the game options? I would certainly welcome that as an alternative way of playing, even though I recognise that most Forum posters love it as it currently stands.

Decadence isn't really that crippling but you can mod the values in the game files. Could also just create a trait and event so you can decide once game loads if you want it. Realistically loyalty and slave management is more of a penalty to growth than decadence. Also without decadence you would just sit at civ 3 golden age for the last 400 turns.Bombax wrote: ↑Sun Aug 04, 2019 12:20 pm I hadn't come across the term 'map painting' until a recent discussion on something I posted last week, when this very useful phrase was used to describe the approach of less realistic games than Empires. Re: Question for Developers - on 'map painting', decadence etc
Decadence is related to loyalty/slaves in that your culture for the CDR calculation depends on having a good loyalty in the regions you produce culture. So it is not fair to say that you can ignore decadence when expanding at all.
Clearly when someone says decadence this or decadence that, they actually mean the culture/decadence = CDR mechanic, but that doesn't roll off the tongue as nicely.

I was under the impression that size and speed of growth were the main factors influencing decadence?
Re: Question for Developers - on 'map painting', decadence etc
Speed of growth is important as the decadence produced by a province decreases over time, but you may have to wait ten turns before it is pacified and the extra decadence production is stopped (and the region starts to have a reasonable loyalty level) . Also forming provinces halves the amount of decadence produced so you have to wait until your new regions can be formed into a province. The size of your empire is also important, the amount of decadence produced is shown on your country information panel
