POAs for pikes fighting in two directions?

Post by fredrik »

Might be a stupid question, but what POAs does a pike block fight with when in combat with an enemy to its front and charged in the rear by skirmishers?

It is my understanding that the rear rank bases are turned to face the enemy to its rear, but will the pike still count its + POA for having a fourth rank when three ranks are facing the enemy to its front and one rank is facing that to its rear? Or does all ranks of the pike block need to face in the same direction to count the bonus for third and fourth rank? Similarly, will the rear rank bases count ++ POAs for having a third and fourth rank even though those have their backs turned to the rear rank bases and are fighting and supporting in the opposite direction?

Nowhere in the rules does it state that the third and fourth ranks need to face in the same direction to count ++ POAs, but the rules for orb formation (which would look similar on the table) state that no pikeman POAs (meaning third and fourth rank bonuses) apply.

I should have dug through the forums before posting, I found this thread from March last year which I think answers my question: viewtopic.php?t=5772 - ergo, the pike will not count the POA for a fourth rank if the fourth rank is turned to face a rear charge, and I guess the conclusion is that all bases must face in the same direction to count any "x ranks" POAs. May I suggest this be added to the FAQ?
