Player switch mid game

I accepted an open challenge posted by paulmcneil between Spanish and Brits. To my surprise when it came my turn to play I was a long way through a game between Seleucids and Skythians. I had been transported into another game! Paul has informed it is the same game he is currently playing against another player. Both games are currently ongoing taking different courses in parallel universes. Can anyone explain how this is possible?
