I would like FOGII to be playable on GNU+Linux. It is possible to play FOGII on Steam already, so couldn't the Matrix/Slitherine team port it?
It has won a Gold rating on Wine:

Good to hear.
Slitherine have explained elsewhere why it isn't economically viable for them to port the game to Linux. I can't immediately find where they did so.

just one of many threads and subjects on a dead for pc port platform, no money, verses high costs, equal waste of time and effort, so another one to add to the list of apple kind of questions regarding port platforms, different platform, so reply and answer

Let us not lose morale quite so readily! As mentioned, FOGII runs well under WINE. Developers could make an investigation into packaging the game as an AppImage (ideally, from a Freedom persepective) or FlatPak. If the game is run using one of these on GNU+Linux, one advantage would be that feedback on bugs etc would all be essentially on the same foundation. It wouldn't matter whether the AppImage were installed onto a .deb or .rpm based system.
AppImage
There is already a WINE AppImage, which might help:
https://github.com/Hackerl/Wine_Appimage
FlatPak
The game could possibly be bundled with WINE. One of the difficulties might be that the installation process is interactive, though.
Steam
It is possible to install Windows Steam on GNU+Linux using WINE.
CodeWeavers
Using a third party organization, like Codeweavers is another possibility. They have much experience in the area of helping Windows games run on GNU+Linux. It could be a win-win: Slitherine/Matrix have their games available on GNU and Codeweavers have a better offering with the addition of FOGII and other Slitherine games.
Virtual Machines
Soon (maybe already!) VMs are having video go straight without passthrough. It will mean 3D graphical games are able to exploit the power of the hardware GPU and render it on screen. Turn Based Strategy is an ideal way to start showcasing that technology. Slitherine could catch some marketing buzz by so doing. Also, I would be surprised if VMs aren't being used in testing already.
So... Field of Glory II and GNU+Linux please!

Re: Field of Glory II on GNU+Linux?
I've had no issues when I tested running the on Mac OS X with a wineskin wrapper....therefore I think for both Linux and Mac that WINE is a reasonably good bet with FoGII. However, that may change for Mac when Apple drops 32 bit support. Plays better then Pike and Shot which on some WINE versions had gfx artifacts and I never could get it to load up PBEM Multiplayer turns successfully.....YMMV though. But with FoGII that works fine. Virtualization is certainly another potential option. Obviously the resultant performance will depend on the hardware of the host computer.
