I am guessing this was a spare slot that was filled out by different people in different rounds to make sure that numbers were even.

Odd number of players, the umpire and other guys take one place, they plays 4 games to make even number of pairs.

Did you see that "Odd Player" had a 3rd-place finish at Jaén?

Yes, I won the tournament :lol: .

In the Spanish tournaments, the organizer must fill the odd number of players if it´s possible, usually there is some guys who can play one or two games to do it. In Jaén there was only one guy to do it, (Juanmi Morillas, the Umpire). He is one of the better Spanish players and he can get 3rd in a tournament with no effort 8) .

I agree with David. It is no surprise that he came 3rd and we can't really force him to play badly.
