Shield designs for my Irish Kern (HYW english)?

Greetings all,

I am adding skirmishers to my HYW continental english army, and picked up some of the great Corvus-Belli Irish Kerns with javelins. I've got them basecoated, but am struggling a bit with how to decorate the shields.... I have some VVV transfers, but they are more "english" than 'Celtic', although I am wondering what Kerns in English service would do for shield devices. Does anyone have any suggestions?

An update: I found a post on another webside that indicated Midieval Kern shields were wicker or wood, with plan leather covers. So, no decoration or coloration. That makes my job easy, but it seems they'll look pretty plain. Anyone have any other thoughts?
