Question regarding random maps

Post by Beorn »

I am especially excited to see the option of playing on random maps, because in my view that is a more realistic simulation of trying to raise your particular group up in that era. If you play as Rome and know and know where you are supposed to expand, who is going to threaten you, etc., your situation is nothing like a Roman leader of that time.

DasTactic is doing a really good series on a random map, but as I was watching, one concern came to mind. Each faction has troops that are well adapted to the lands where they originated, in real life. But how about on a random map? Is there a chance that a tribe with forest focused troops would start out in the middle of the plains? As the human player, it is not such a big deal because you can just re-start if you don't like it. However, if you commit to a game at a given difficulty level and then find that several of your AI opponents are very much weakened by being in a location their troops are poorly adapted to, that would be unfortunate. (Not to mention unrealistic, given that the causation is in the other direction. Groups developed military units based on their surroundings.)

Hi Beorn,

that is a very valid point and I have to confess that map generator currently doesn't cover this. I will definitely add it to our tracking system and once there is some time, we will try to address that.
