Post by david53 »

Hi There
Played first comp at Roll Call, found out the Army I took could do with a lot of changes to get it working for me(I'm sure it would work for other people as it stands) but could you please tell me if this is a better move. I'll show the first Army then the revised Army.

8 x Medium Foot Average Protected Drilled Crossbow
8 x Heavy foot Average Armoured undrilled Def Spear
8 x Medium Foot Average protected undrilled Crossbow
8 x Medium Foot Unprotected Average Undrilled Bow
1 x Camp fortified.

Later Crusader 1150 with Syrian States Allies

4 x Knights Sup Undrilled Hy/Armoured Lance Sword
1 x 6 = 3 Spearmen in front Hy Foot Armoured Average Drilled Def Spear

1 x 6 = 3 Spearmen in front Hy Foot Armoured Average undrilled Def Spear

Camp unfortified
Ally

Six BGs with only one commander, including a Shock troop BG?

Meanwhile the IC will be doing almost nothing with the mixed troops, as the knight BGs will have their integral TC with them...

I like better the troop composition, specially in period (the mixed troops would be liabilities against strong infantry), but I see a potential command crisis looming.

The mixed formations with crossbows are specialized for shooting mounted which works in the Crusades, but Armoured Spearmen are fairly tough all-purpose troops for competition. Crossbows have penetrating power, but again that's more useful historically than competitively - I'd suggest one mandatory drilled Crossbow BG with 8 bases to throw up to 6 dice - they can provide rear support for the spears and then maneuver against suitable targets.

The cap on LH Bow on the Allies list is 8 bases so you can only have 2 BGs - take those with the mandatory Ghilman BG in support for a shooty brigade, and if you want throw in some Bedouin LH Lancers if you to terrorize skirmishers. 4 BGs is getting large for an allied contingent, but if it's shooters that's more manageable.

ICs are great for undrillled troops and against shooting, and here he does nothing for the allies. Maybe you are better off with the allied FC and the rest TCs.

Thanks for taking the time to write so you think I should drop the mixed units or keep them and take crossbow and spear BG undrilled or would I have to do that anyway. I understand the ally bit but not to clear over the Crusader foot. The orginal army was fine but really did need light troops to cover the foot or just to worry the enemy in the case of LH.
