ARE LF and LH over powered

Post by pyrrhus »

just a poll really as you play more and more do you find the light infantry and light horse over powerful for their points or do you find all the shooting evading etc easier to deal with once you have more experienced ?

Personally, I have found light troops in FoG to be neither overpowered nor underpowered. My own experience, together with posts in this forum, indicates they are best used in ways that correspond with their historical performance.

I have noticed a tendency by some posters to focus on match-ups between individual units; perhaps this is a holdover from their experiences with other rule sets. Success in FoG appears to all about developing a cohesive battle plan that employs all of the army's various components in a coordinated manner. That is a very good thing, IMHO. :D

Cheers,
Scott

I find that it depends. I've recently been using only two skirmish units: 4 poor LF and 4 not very good LH. They are really good value as they stop second moves and sometimes do the tempting a charge/keeping routers going thing (but rarely). And they bump up my BG total.

However, I did experiment with adding another LH unit and found it was a waste of points.

When I used Bosporans I used lots of skirmishers - 9 BGs they worked in some games by ganging up on people but were a bit of a waste in others. It depends what you're facing. for example, using early Persians this weekend the enemy skirmishers were a bit of a taregt so the more the merrier in the enemy army.

Two LH can effectively delay a larger, tougher mounted force, or combine to shoot up one BG. One just runs away...

If worried about LF being over powered use them in a mixed BG as a 3rd rank. After a game or two you wont think they are over powered.

To fight LF you need LH, or heavy enough armour to ignore them. Failing that shooty troops of any sort can slowly degrade them. To fight LH you need better/more LH or enough armour to ignore them or again shooty troops.

An army with few skirmishers can still get a good result out of small, outnumbered BGs. Counting points, my 4 strong LH and LF are big point earners, just by charging together with some knights or good MF against the enemy skirmishers. The presence of close order troops guarantees an evade, and if your light troops catch them, disorder and a rear impact makes it easy to get them to fragmented and beyond. If they hang on despite the rear hit, your combat troops should get there the following turn to finish the enemy off.

This is a game of combined arms, or overwhelming superiority.

I enjoy "herding" those LH towards a table edge. We have been using starter army lists from the various FoG suppliments. So far, my usual opponents have had some LH.

I don't view them as over powered. But then, I have had ample chances to learn how to send them packing.
