Road+rail bridge combo

Post by Erik2 »

A rail bridge is of no use to land units (except trains of course). A tank unit still have to stop on the river crossing.
I think the rail bridge should provide some movement benefit. They were often used whenever there was no available road bridge.

But a combination of road and rail bridge in the same location also give no movement benefit.
It seems the present of the rail bridge negates the road bridge benefit. That must be an oversight.

Yep, treating a rail-bridge like open ground could work fine for crossing with non-rail ground units. That wouldn't be such a fuss if roads (and rails in this case) have straight movement costs.

I can't reproduce this with the rail+road bridge combo over rivers that they don't provide any movement bonus. Even a curve over a river gives my infantry here the road bonus on open ground, but I haven't tested every single direction and terrain now. What terrain and in which direction have you placed them? A screenshot could help. Something like a bridge over a swamp with river could hardly give a bonus at all.

Yes, straight movement costs would solve a lot.

It is a bit strange that a single road has movement bonus depending on the terrain it runs through.
The road naturally stays the same.
And I would argue that troops on a road does not spread out into the surrounding terrain unless they are not moving in column (preparing for attack etc).

Where the current road_factors still mainly make sense are on hills/difficult-terrain or mountains. These terrains could even slow down rail-movement, as tunnels aren't always an option for that time. Also, during rainy seasons, roads could also be flooded on swamps and rice fields. OOB still makes dirty-roads useless on wet climate setting, so that's working fine at least.

Below is a recently good example of mine in Blitzkrieg/06_CaseRed where the road_factor failed because the underlying terrain forbids towed-gun movement.
Erik, the other example should also show like above that a paved road-bridge crossed by a rail-bridge still gives a movement bonus, so no idea what's suppose to be not working there. The game supports unique road_factors for different movement-types since the last 1-2 DLCs, by the way, so maybe it was a different unit/movement type that couldn't get a bonus in such example?

I would also like to add that there is some interesting interaction of broken train bridge and armoured train. You would expect the train to be unable to cross the bridge, but you can actually cross it with just a standard river penalty. Which means you have get your train next to the bridge, next turn you get on the bridge tile and next turn you get across to the other side.

Yeah, noticed the same mechanic. And I think it's been like this since the first Blitzkrieg DLC. Never bothered me, though. Kind of accounted for a missing unit to repair rail bridges.
