Colors (in Springfield Ohio) was very strong. I suppose that I have those who engaged
in "word of mouth" advertising to thank for that. It seems that
everyone at Origins or who spoke with me at Historicon brought a
friend or two. Those that helped make this happen, you know who you
are (even if you are too humble to admit it) and I thank you. Keep
in mind that we achieved such numbers with a number of absences due
to other commitments. I can easily see us growing to 20 or more
players next time around.
Without further ado, the results:
In 15mm:
Brian Woolard (Late Republican Roman) 58 points
Al Applegate (Later Selucid) 55 points
Chuck Hines (Swiss) 49 points
(opponent's combined scores: 94 as tiebreaker)
Pat Pursely (French Ordinnance) 49 points
(opponent's combined scores: 79 as tiebreaker)
Andy Swingle (Syrian States) 41 points
Dick Hurchanik (Ancient Spanish) 33 points
Jim Chapin (HYW English, Continental) 29/39 points
(only two rounds, volunteered to bow out)
Fred Daniel (Principate Roman) 24 points
Allen Campbell (Early Crusader) 22 points
Dennis Lockhart (Later Carthage) 13 points
Eric Mckenzie 11 points
Jeff Russ 1/12 points
(only two rounds, unable to stay for final round.)
In 25mm:
Philip Knapke(Late Republican Roman) 53 points
Doug Anderson (Free Company) 43 points
Steve Phallen (Silician Armenian) 28 points
Jeff Fletcher (Early Crusader) 13 points
Congrats to Brian, though I'm not sure how me pulled it off

time I fielded a question in his games, it dealt with the possibility
of a BG routing through another BG. I hope Dennis and Jim didn't
find Brian too much to endure on the ride home!
On the 25mm front, the new guy, Philip Knapke wins his first
tournament playing his first, second, and third game of FoG. I
played him first round and you're always careful as a tournament
organizer to not beat up on the new guy too bad. A few turns in, I
realized he was no ordinary beginner. I expect Phil will continue to
be a force to be reckoned with.
I also feel the need to mention Andy Swingle being on the top table
in the final round. Loosing to the winner in the final round usually
sees one fall a few spots, but Andy fell three despite inflicting 8
attrition points on Brian.
Many of us were also pleased to see Pat tie for third, especially
after a 1-24 loss in the first round. The dice usually aren't kind
to Pat and it was good to see him do well.
Actually, it would be good to see everyone do well but some will,
some won't, and that's just the nature of the game. It is worthy of
note that half of the players were still mathematically in the hunt
going into the final round.
I have checked over the scores in a quiet room with a fine toothed
comb and did not find any serious errors. Brian, the tournament
winner had one less point and Eric's score was my addition error.
Once corrected, Dennis overtook Eric, but other than that all scores
were correct and placing remained the same.
Special thanks to:
1) Again, those who brought a friend. I was terribly pleased to have
16 players up from the 4 we had at Origins.
2) Doug Anderson for opting to come to ATC and allowing us to have a
25mm division. I hope the Clevelanders didn't miss you too much.
3) Jim Chapin for helping us round-out numbers for the third round.
4) Chuck Hines (our long distance traveler) for clear thinking in a
crisis and knowing when to take charge. We probably would have lost
another 15 minutes to my indecision if you hadn't stepped up.
5) Everyone for making it a truly enjoyable tournament to run. I
answered several questions but didn't have to deal with any heated
discussions or interpretations.
Apologies (and there are many):
1) For scoring without a laptop (too much headache and confusion for
both myself and the players)
2) For the compressed time frame with less than 12 hours from start
to finish (if myself or the HMGS-GL officers had known before
Wednesday 9/10, we would have made adjustments in points or
something.)
3) For lack of prizes/trophies (no excuse really, I alone am to
blame, but possibly this is preferable to an entry fee?)
I will work to keep these things from happening again. Please inform
me of any other improvements that we can make for next time. I now
have more appreciation for the "tighter" that ship Rich Hartley used
to run with DBM.
Thanks,
JF
