Campaign Battle Ending/Extending
Campaign Battle Ending/Extending
Great game, Richard! Only one thing to ask: Could you please add an option to continue battle after the player won (reached enemy’s breaking point)? The Custom Battle has it, but Campaign’s battle, unfortunatelly, does not. Sometimes it makes perfect sense - to end it when the future result is obvious (to save player from boring chasing of a few survived enemy units). But sometimes it takes away satisfaction of winning: especially in a hard one, when the enemy is still fighting and you want to see them really finished (“Read my lips: Dead, - D. E. D!..” Lol). Please, Richard!

This cannot easily be added without breaking the campaign.Starikip wrote:Great game, Richard! Casualties inflicted during the pursuit are already taken account of in the casualties roster when the battle ends normally. And the enemy isn't "still fighting", they have reached breaking point and are fleeing the field.

Well, technically they are not (some of them are still fighting). After reaching the breaking point in one of the Custom battle I still had to fight a few units (Triarii, I think) who, it seemed, preferred to die like “300 spartans”, than cowardly run away. I was really fascinated to see how long/much they could take more... And they proved to be heroes. Dead heroes. Even after that I was still chasing some light troops who were probably committed to fight guerrilla warfare against my victorious army (which was fun too) but unfotrunately “the nightfall stopped bloodshed” sign appeared, and the battle was over for good. Richard, it gives such immersive feeling for some players (like myself) to see the fight to the last man that if you can do it, please make this option!
p.s. This is a quote from Steam forum, where one of the players talks about his experience: “Loving everything so far except for the anti-climactic finish. Sometimes I'm in the middle of some grand plan and am maneuvering and attacking and routing and suddenly I get the "enemy has lost heart" message and that's that. I'm almost disappoined for winning since I really wanted to execute on some major maneuver and see it come to fruition.” This is exactly my point.

I will quote myself in another post. I think my idea would end with the anticlimatic endings. I don't know if this would be possible, but if it is, I would really like to see it.
If you end up winning by a considerable difference, instead of just saying "the enemy lost heart" in a pop up and winning instantly, the losing side could start getting cohesion checks with a malus because of how the battles is going on.
Hell, it could be totally changed for all battles and it would be awesome. What if, whenever win conditions are met, instead of getting an auto-win, every single unit must pass a cohesion check with a -3 every turn until they all end up routing or the losing side is able to make a comeback. Also, if the comeback is accomplished, all the routing units would make a rally test simulating their spirits lifted up because their mates where turning the tide of the battle. It could be like a last resort thing, difficult to accomplish, but very rewarding if done.
That would make for very interesting end of battles with climatic ends and avoid those moments where battle still seems not to be decided at all but since you reached the win condition threshold you end up winning, even if you desired to continue the battle.
Re: Campaign Battle Ending/Extending
Yeah I was having a battle where it seemed like I was losing an equal number of units each turn as the AI, it seemed like it was going down to the wire and the result was in the balance, but ding! I hit 50% enemy casualties and they all went home. I love the campaign system, and it probably saves me lots of time not having to fight to the bitter end - but it is disappointing not having the option. You can, of course, not play a campaign game, just play a random/custom battle, and then you get the option at the end of each turn to continue fighting even though you have already won.
