Hi there, got a persistent issue with one of my two windows 10 machines running the Fields of Glory 2 client.
The problem machine is used as a tv box - but has decent stats i7 geforce 980 16 gigs memory etc. Updated drivers and win 10 64 bit, latest service packs etc etc. This machine uses a Samsung flatscreen tv for a monitor in front room at 1920x1080 60 fps and runs the sound through the nvidia hi def audio through the same hdmi cable.
So FOG2 is perfectly stable on this machine for playing offline / campaigns, single battles or whatnot and for hotseat. But when processing a PBEM turn and reviewing the replay it very often freezes the machine mid way through with sputtering audio finally leading to a static screen necessitating a hard reboot. This has happened a good half a dozen times, and twice has triggered a bluescreen / collecting data reset.
On my other machine (running on a conventional 144 fps monitor and a higher resolution) and a geforce 1080 - never had any problem.
***
windows reliability viewer just shows "windows was not shut down properly" - and the blue screens show "a live kernal event".

sounds more of a software side of the things tbh, so let take a look and see if anything stands out
How to get a DirectX Diagnostic file:
1. click on "START"
2. click "run"
3. type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice
We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments rather than pasted into the body of the post.
once the report has been made, just attach it to your post with first adding the file to a zip, which is then permitted to attach to the forum.
apart from the standard things like, anti virus, which can be seen from the logs etc, screen saver settings, power saving settings etc, or even power management settings, but normally a clean install of windows 10 is better than a upgraded one, as you have 2 pc's and only one acts this way, something is in the mix the game doesn't like.
standard things are, some types of background recording software, motherboard tools, or anything that conflicts with the game when running, one reason why a dedicated pc works better than one that's doing others things or can be, eg software loaded at start or running in the background etc

Cheers have added the dxdiag report as an attachment to the first post in the topic.zakblood_slith wrote:sounds more of a software side of the things tbh, so let take a look and see if anything stands out

Re software, both machines are pretty similar - same version of windows, same virus software (norton security on the same license deal) same graphics drivers etc. The only significant differences that leap out at me are that while the machine using the gsync monitor at 144 uses the realtec drivers from the motherboard for sound - the tv box machine is using a different driver for the hdmi connection "nvidia hidef" but this might just be a confirmation bias thing due to hearing the sound stutter prior to the freeze on this machine.
Re: Persistent Windows Freeze on 1 of 2 machines (Win10 64 b
I suggest you to set temporarily the sound default output for Realtek, instead as it's now for the Nvdia HDMI. Just that you can rule out that the freezing is caused by it.
Re: Persistent Windows Freeze on 1 of 2 machines (Win10 64 b
also to add to what VPualus has written, you have some hardware error in the logs as well, reporting to blue screens, so not the only issues your having on this pc?
so a hardware software conflict somewhere on the pc, finding out what is another thing, as the 3 in there aren't game related+++ WER2 +++:

Re: Persistent Windows Freeze on 1 of 2 machines (Win10 64 b
when i say aren't game related, if it happens at the same time the game is on, then something else is causing it, as log files points to a given error at the point of the error, and these reports all point to the system, eg cab errors

all suggest errors in the operating system as all have O/S code name points
apart from the ones when bad or wrong driver has been used as these give the code name point at P1: 10.0.15063.0:1
where as NewColossus_x64vk.exe error is the Nvidia Vulkan driver causing a system error, and more than likely leading to a blue screen error, but altering what's been mentioned above hopefully will stop this from happening, as the Nvidia drivers have been installed and over written the default ones used by Realtek High Definition Audio.
the motherboard your using is causing more than a few errors tbh in games, search
Intel(R) Xeon(R) E7 v3/Xeon(R) E5 v3/Core i7 DDRIO (VMSE) gaming errors and you will i'm sorry to say see many pages of windows 10 and games errors, seems either a bios and or driver pack update is needed, imo.
but if the switch to realtek drivers works for now, your sorted.

So I tried using this PC with normal speakers and monitor and using the realtek drivers - still got a pbem freeze. Decided to try a few other games and got a crash also with the new Dishonored expansion so decided to look at the normal culprit for problems on this machine (memory config) - did a bios/cmos reset and restored everything to default and manual settings for the memory timings and it seems to have solved the problem. It's now working on the tv screen with the hdmi sound drivers without issue. Almost certainly a hardware / memory issue on my machine - the thing that threw me was how FOG2 was working perfectly in single player and hotseat but just crashing with the PBEM turn replays - I suppose those must do something deeper with memory access that was finding the errors with system setup.
Anyway thanks for the help all.

Re: Persistent Windows Freeze on 1 of 2 machines (Win10 64 b
glad you got it sorted, memory overclocking and cpu overclocking is an art in itself, overclocked a i7-2700K CPU @ 3.50GHz to 4.20GHz for more than a few years now and keep a older pc alive as a test rig, just got some good ram to keep up the speed as the memory timings needed to be spot on the keep it from blue screening and failing the mem tests.
rams a pain, as never had any luck without getting matched pairs for ram timings but others seem to not have the issue, so know where your coming from.

Re: Persistent Windows Freeze on 1 of 2 machines (Win10 64 b
Yeah its annoying stuff - I've kept buying near identical systems from Scan every couple of years and cycling them through my business and home use - and while I've stopped bothering to order them overclocked they keep having memory issues if the timings are not completely right (and often the shop set profiles go with xmp settings causing difficult to track issues.)zakblood_slith wrote:glad you got it sorted, memory overclocking and cpu overclocking is an art in itself, overclocked a i7-2700K CPU @ 3.50GHz to 4.20GHz for more than a few years now and keep a older pc alive as a test rig, just got some good ram to keep up the speed as the memory timings needed to be spot on the keep it from blue screening and failing the mem tests.

Its funny that even in this case where I've got the machine specs motherboard bios revision and precise compatible memory (+timings) it can be something like a random crash weeks ago that reverted the profile to xmp (rather than manual set timings) and suddenly a whole bunch of random stuff can happen.
I do think its interesting that it was happening purely during the PBEM replay sequence though- suggests that's a bit more memory aggressive than ordinary client gameplay and I've noticed its sometimes a bit glitchy with sound and movement even when it does work properly. I wonder if perhaps future patching of the game might do well to smooth out the pbem replay sequence and have it displayed more smoothly with only committed moves shown and a bit more consistent camera movement.
Only tiny criticism I've got of the game really - all in all its superb
Re: Persistent Windows Freeze on 1 of 2 machines (Win10 64 b
it could be pushing the part more than another, either a memory leak or high use etc, if you notice a spike in task manager or any memory test util, it could lead to a better idea of what it is or could be tbh, unless someone else get it to repeat, which so far your the only one, it's hard to say if it can or could be fixed on this side
