A few questions on Hannibal's armies in the game

Post by Paul59 »

I wondered if any one can answer a few questions for me about the Hannibal armies as they are represented in the game to help me with my little mod? I could probably look this up myself, but I'm feeling a bit lazy, after all this modding!

1) In the Hannibal in Italy army 216-203 bc list there are Elephants. Why is this? I thought Hannibal had only one left by the time of Trasimene, I don't know how much longer it survived beyond that.

2) Also in the 216-203 bc list there are Veteran Armoured cavalry. These are not in the earlier Hannibal in Italy 218-217 bc list, so presumably they are a reinforcement of some kind. What are they meant to represent? Did a reinforcement of Libyphoenician heavy cavalry reach Italy, or are these local Italian cavalry who joined Hannibal's army?

3) These same Veteran Armoured cavalry are also in the Hannibal in Africa 202 bc list, again, what are they representing?

Didn't he get a batch of reinforcements some time - after Cannae? Seem to recall it was about the only time he was sent any.

Probably his existing cavalry who have gained experience by being under arms and winning for an extended period, and getting equipment upgrades through kit taken from dead/captured Romans.

Hannibal did get some reinforcements from home during his time in southern Italy, which may have included some elephants.

As above. They would be Liby-Phoenician cavalry.

Liby-Phoenician cavalry.

Thanks Richard, that is exactly what I needed to know.

Polybius, Plutarch speak of Hannibal arriving in Italy with approx. 19 elephants...

In 215/214 BC Hannibal received reinforcements from North Africa including elephants. Livy, in Book 23 describes the Carthaginians ordering Bomilcar to take the fleet, 4000 cavalry, 40 elephants and 500 talents of silver to reinforce Hannibal. Later he writes about Bomilcar arriving with the reinforcements and the use of these elephants by Hannibal in siege warfare is described. Other forces were sent to reinforce Hannibal, including forces with elephants but other elephants probably did not arrive.
