How do you win with LH/LF armies?

Post by gozerius »

This is a question for the tournament guys.
How do you expect to win with an army made up primarily of LH/LF in the time allotted? It seems that if you fight in the traditional way, trying to suck the enemy into a bad position, time runs out before you ever get to a decision.

It depends on how much you mean by primarily.

At the last FoG tournament I went to I used an army with 10 BGs of lights and 5 of non lights and that worked very well. The lights softened things up when the heavier troops (Armoured medium foot and armoured lancers) killed them.

On Sunday I will be using an army where only 2 of my 14 BGs are armoured, 2 are protected and everything else is unarmoured. Only 8 of my 14 BGs will be lights but in a lot of ways it is a mostly light army. I am hoping that lots and lots of shooting will do the job.

At the end of deployment count how many BGs you need to break, i.e. 14 BGs total so need to break 7. It's almost a given you will get the camp, so that's minus one to that figure. For the rest, pick and choose from the enemy which ones you think your light troops can break then hunt those down while evading the rest of the buggers. Easy enough?

Can I, immodestly, point you at the Alp Arslan in Helsinki topic in the AAR forum - it may give you some ideas although to be fair only about half the army was lights.

Concentrating your shooting if you have shooty lights is an obvious hint.

A lot of armies preform based on the personality of the gamer who is controling them. Some players have certain armies that they feel more comfortable with than others.

There is one guy in Birmingham Alabama USA who has won several DBM tournaments with a Numidian army. Since that group has shifted to FoG, I do not know if he has fielded it yet as most FoG events so far in this region has been theme events. i will ask him in two weeks about it at the next FoG event in Hattisburg Mississippi.

Well, I ask because I tried a Thracian army with 6 BG of LH (2x4 w bow, 4x4 w J/Lsp), 2 of LF (1x8 w bow, 1x8 w J/Lsp), 4x6 MF-HW, 1x4 Cav - Lsp,Sw, against Hannibal and couldn't do a thing about it. Hannibal kept his Numidian LH from ever failing a CT even when they were being shot at by 16 bases of LH. I did well holding up the Gallic/Spanish Cav on the other flank, but his Scutarii ran right through my MF in the center. I was pleased to see his African spearmen reduced to nothing more than baggage guards due to the cluttering of the battlefield with open and enclosed fields. Perhaps I should have simply charged his LH sooner, taking them out before his cav could get in position to provide support.

I has playing some LH/LF armies, and I can say, that this kind of armies have a good chance to win.

You need to concentrate shooting as well as posible, and shoot to the mounted troops. LH could be used to attract shock mounted troops out of the main Battle line of your enemy, and then this troops are in trouble.

I usually focus my fire in the small BGs of LF and MF, you only need 2 hits to test.

LH can charge without problems against fragmented enemy, and once broken, the enemy can´t escape   .

Actually to win with LH armies you need your opponents to fail cohesion tests :(

On Sunday we were forcing CT's with firghtening regularity but our opponents seemed able to roll 8 or 9 on two dice at will :( The worst point was when we managed 7 hits from shooting on one BG and did absolutely nothing :(

If your opponents CT dice are roughly average you can cause no end of pain with lights. If they have an IC in the area (our opponents didn't) then it is much harder to hurt things but otherwise you should eventually get some emeny FRG at which point you can charge in and beat them up.
