shortsword definitely.. those weapons were nasty..did you know that Perseus, King of Macedon wanted to rise the morale of his men by presenting them dead bodies of men that died while facing Romans, only to have own men terrified by the wounds Roman swords produced? (or was it Phillip? now i dont remember
)

Offensive Spear, obviously. Nothing can resist a 5th century hoplite charge.

I put pikes cause I like the idea of a massive porcupine type of formation that nothing can really approach (except from the flanks which should be blocked off by cavalry and lighter infantry).
In Rome Total War 2, the pikes are fun to hack up badguys with.
I like the pikes in this Field of Glory game cause they look cool.

Now then, why aren't the heavy weapons winning? They look cool and I'm pretty sure they give a helpful bonus against armour.
