Morale drop from seeing routs

Post by nikgaukroger »

Having now fought my way through 3 of the epic battles I think I can honestly say that I have seen less than 5 morale drops from a friendly units and/or lost general by units close by that have tested - and there have been quite a lot of them :D

Seems rather low to me (even allowing for the large unit size in these battles).

hmmm, I've played two epic battles and I think I've seen a few moral drops than you, maybe 4-5 per battle, although I can't say that I've been keeping track.

This is WAD. Contagious morale drops are more likely if the units are already disrupted or fragged.

Plenty of DIS and FRG units close to routs, just seem to have negligible numbers of morale drops from seeing them - pretty sure I've had a statistically significant sample by now as well.

In fact I think I've seen more autobreaks of huge phalanx, etc. units than morale drops from routs  Just feels a bit odd.

Not spoiling enjoyment though :D

Are these Roman heavy infantry that you are talking about? I very rarely see them fail a cohesion test when an adjacent unit routs or a general dies. I guess this is due to their normally high moral level, but I sometimes wonder if they get an additional special bonus for being Roman!

Heavy foot ( and mixed) also get a +1 bonus when testing cohesion which makes them pretty resilient. If there a nearby general in the line of command in range whose in close combat they(any unit) then get an additional +1 bonus.

They don't, but they do get a +1 bonus for being Heavy Foot.

Certainly helps produce a slug-fest in a game like Pydna :D

It's an addition to the tabletop rules, but I think it brings some added realism.

In the scenario battles I am thinking of it as akin to the GBGs in FoG:R :D

Certainly fits with the accounts of Roman battles I think - they are usually portrayed as being quite long duration, which was, IIRC, Sabin's conclusion for analysis of battle duration (as opposed to hoplite vs hoplite clashes which he sees as generally being quite quick; perhaps a modifier for them if the game covers them in an expansion?).

Having now played a non-scenario game (Seleukid vs Pergamene FWIW) I can say I think I have now doubled the number of rout caused morale drops I have seen :D 8)

yeah, i had my share of mass routs so far... but to get them, you need to fragment multiple enemies.. best I got so far was when my legion engaged my enemy in front, and then my cavalry returned from chasing down light skirmishers and hit the enemy line from rear.. those units broke instantly, while cavalry just rolled down the line routing everything in the path... i had like 15% before it started, with over 50% once the domino effect stopped... instant win
