Suggested Army Lists for simple battles to learn the system?

Post by Temple »

It has been many, many  years since I last played a game dealing with this era of armies. So I was wondering if someone could suggest a couple of armies that have a fairly simple choice of units so I could set up some custom battles to learn the game system without getting lost in the depths of a bunch of different types on each side. I realize I could just build a battle with just a few types on each side, but I was hoping for armies that have some variety. I'm not quite sure I'm making myself understood, but any help is appreciated :D

I'd be interested to know if you felt there was something missing from the tutorials or manual? Or maybe you prefer a different way to learn the game?

Cheers.

Romans spring immediately to mind. Or Macedonians.

The tutorials introduce how to play the battles, I was asking about the more basic armies because I'm interested in learning how to play better.

Pike armies (macedonians, ptolomeic) or Cartago armies because they have covered practically all unit types.

In my opinion, avoid cavalry armies as first ones, so no Numidians or Parthians; i might suggest you Macedonians, Romans or maybe Ptolemaics

It might be worth looking at the "Quick Battles" section as well. Pyrrhics v Carthage might be of help to you.

In DBA miniatures many players collect armies in historical pairs because the armies have a small number of units. Beginners are almost always advised to start with Rome and Carthage. Rome has fewer unit types, so that would be a good place to start. Then move on to Carthage, which introduces more unit types, which have to be coordinated well for a win.
