Naval Battle

Post by ziza »

Now I have troubles in naval battle, because my powerful army of Hastati can't win. :)
There is Huge of something, but if they were on land then I would crush them like a bug. But they are standing always in sea and can attack any of my 3 cities, which I can't afford to defend all. :x :)

Manual says that heavy armored and mounted troops are not good in naval combat.
My questions:
1) What is the best troop in naval battle? Maybe archers?
2) Are peasants better than Triarii in naval combat?
3) Are the same type, but more upgraded units better in naval combat? For example, are Thureophoroi better than Thracians in naval combat?
4) Are archers better than skirmishers in naval combat?
5) Are skirmishers better than light infantry in naval combat?
6) According to manual, archers and light troops will convert to marines in naval battle. Does that mean they will be exactly the same units - marines?
7) What about experience? What bonus it gives in naval combat?
8 ) Hastati are heavy infantry, but can shoot 2 arrows. Does that (i.e. shooting) give some bonus in naval combat?

Thanks

I would go with light infantery and skirmishers/archers any time....

Heavy infantery will just sink

I don't know about Spartan but in Gates of Troy i think you can look in the squads text file and see how effective each unit type is in naval battle. Though according to ithat Hastati should be quite effective so it may not be accurate?

Hastati-
NavalCombat 75
NavalBonus 10

I've been curious about the naval battles as well, though what i'm wondering is why don't troops gain experience from naval battles?

I beleive that means they contribute x(75+(10x)) total with X being the number of hastiti.

Either that, or its 75+(10X) total.

Thank you for answers.
Squads.txt file was really useful.

Finally I know that peasants are useless also in naval battle, because:
Peasant -
NavalCombat 20
NavalBonus 0

And now I understand that cavalry (including light, but not shooting) are much more useless than heavy infantry (I thought they both are very useless).

Still I don't know which is better from those two:

Peltastes -
NavalCombat 100
NavalBonus 0

Hastati -
NavalCombat 75
NavalBonus 10

It is a surprise for me (but I am glad :) ) that my hastati are also powerful in naval combat, because they are better than many light infantry. I just had too few of them (medium Hastati + 1 Triarii).

without a dought the best units to use as marines are the heavy peltasts (I can never remember how to spell that name) at a pince the ordinary ones will do but thay are not nearly as effective, if your using persians I would suggest sparabaras
as the best eastern marine, immortals are too expensive. Use them in small fleets of 6 units, a bit of experiment will probarbly show you that large navies no matter how powerfull loose more units then small ones, at least this is my experience, 3 or 4 such fleets should be enough to protect your coastline, its often best to prempt an attack by sinking enemy fleets that are building up outside your borders, or make friends with them so thay go of and trash someone else.......cheers
