Field of Glory 2 Army Lists Rome vs Carthage

Post by Daniele »

Field of Glory 2 will be huge. Spanning nearly 250 years from the Rise of Rome, it will allow players to choose from over 75 different army lists, each one both unique and historically accurate.

Today we want to give you a taste of this potential and what’s better than showing the Army Lists for two great rivals of the Ancient World?

Rome and Carthage fought bitterly for over a century for supremacy in the Mediterranean Sea, and although the conflict ended with a complete Roman victory, there was a moment in which she risked being totally destroyed: the invasion of Italy by Hannibal in 218 BC.

We have created two infographics showcasing some of the units you’ll have at your disposal for both sides during Hannibal’s campaign in Northern Italy. Click on the banner below to discover them!

The units showcased in the infographic aren’t the only ones available to the armies, but they are some of the more significant units for the conflict in Northern Italy.

I don't like some of these units!
1) Carthaginian elephants (this is indo-hellenistic!) and Roman cavalry (wrong shields!) are not historically accurate.
2) Hastati/Principes and Raw legionaries have almost no differences.
3) Italian Foot armed only as legionaries (Light Spears or Impact Foot), but where is Italian Hoplites (Ofensive Spears)?
4) Some Carthaginian units are Spanish and Numidians or Spanish and Gallic at the same time - this is not good idea, I think.
5) Balearic Slingers have swords???
6) Where is Spanish Caetrarii? Where is Spanish Medium Cavalry? Where is Mercenary Greek Hoplites?
Thanks.

Hannibal did not have any mercenary Greek hoplites. The models are there, but not appropriate to Hannibal's army in Italy.

And if you want that in 1 figure display 60 men, and velites have 4 figures, hastati/principes have 8 figures etc.
Then one legion will be in 5 units of velites, 5 units of hastati/principes, and 1-2 units of triarii.
How do you make triarii units? if divide 600 people 60, it will be 10 figures. 10 figures in 1 unit or 5 figures in 2 each units?
May be 4 figures for Light Foot (and 2 figures for Light Cavalry) is bad idea and should have done more figures for this units?
Can I change the numbers of figures per unit in map editor?
Thanks!

Triarii units have 4 figures (240 men).

Legions were rarely at paper strength.

Not in the map editor, but you can change them in the squads file, which is a normal Excel spreadsheet. Custom scenarios can have their own version of the squads file, so you can customise all of the units if you wish. They can also be individually named in the editor.

I found this depiction of a Balearic slinger. I am not sure how accurate this is, but it looks like he has either a large dagger or short sword . . .

6) Where is Spanish Caetrarii?
Well, I suppose they are meant to be the light javelinmen shown in the list, but they should have small rounded buckler-type shield, shouldn't they?

I hope you don't mind me pointing to another rather glaring historical inaccuracy... The Romans look much too grumpy in the way they're depicted here. According to Livy the average Roman squaddie was "valde beatum" (forgive me if my Latin is slightly off as I'm quoting from memory), and invariably went into battle with a big grin on his face. Grumpy Romans rarely, if ever, appear in accounts of the period. On the plus side, the Carthaginians look spot on - resolute, but deep down they know they're stuffed...

Other than that, this all looks splendid and I look forward to many happy hours playing FoG2!!!

Indeed, but as we only have Roman accounts to go from, we have assumed that they are biased. Crucifying 5,000 slaves along the Appian Way sounds rather grumpy to me.

I'd certainly rather imagine Roman crucifying 5,000 slaves while looking grumpy than with big grins on their faces.
