Game no longer works.
I bought the game on Feb 22, 2008 and had some issues running then; however, I was told to run it as an administrator and that worked. I haven't played it for a while and decided rather recently to pick it up and play it again but it doesn't seem to work even as an administrator. I have it on my laptop which has vista as the os and the order# 3740015414. If you could help me with it that would be great. I'm wondering since I haven't played it for so long if I need to reinstall it? Sounds kind of drastic but when I try to load the game it doesn't even go to the title screen. Thanks.

Windows XP keeps bugging me about SP3 update. Is that one of the updates causing the problem with CEaW?firepowerjohan wrote:Did you run a windows update recently? Anyhow we have a hotfix for the windows update that you should try.

Will the hoxfix affect current games?firepowerjohan wrote:What problems? If you run the hotfix then game will run.rkr1958 wrote:Windows XP keeps bugging me about SP3 update. Also, I didn't mean to imply that there's a problem with CEaW. It's been rock solid for me since the day I've installed it. I should have worded it better and implied that the issue is with the XP SP 3 update and the O/S changes that it introduces. I'm very familiar with software development projects and the issues that O/S upgrades and patches cause. I've just be putting off the XP SP3 upgrade mainly because of the breakage it introduces wrt/CEaW. Thanks for your hard work and fast turnaround wrt/CEaW hotfix.

Yes it could very well be SP3 that causes it. The hotfix makes the game run again though, but some ppl experience worse performance after hotfixing it. We will produce another hotfix soon that improves the performance again to the same level it was pre hotfix (changing Java version).

Thank you. I'll hold off on XP SP3 for a while then.firepowerjohan wrote:Ah, now I get it I thought u had already updated to SP3 and was hesitant whether to use the hotfixrkr1958 wrote:Will the hoxfix affect current games?firepowerjohan wrote: What problems? Still no luck.
Well, I tried that java fix to no avail. I tried to redownload the game and reinstall it. 3 things happened: 1) even though I uninstalled the game it said the file already existed, then 2) it said it could not install the launcher.exe file, then to top it off 3) antivir found a trojan while installing it (TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen). Needless to say even after deny access to the trojan the game still doesn't even load up. Not sure what to do.

You bought the Slitherine version, not Matrix version?deedubb81 wrote:Well, I tried that java fix to no avail. I use Avira antivir also, and it is has popped up false alarms on me at a couple points while patching or installing CEAW and possibly other games of that family which I might have played, but cannot mention here due to NDA restrictions.
I'm sorry you cannot get the game running yet, but the Trojan warning isn't anything to worry about.

I bought it from slitherine, I have an email from them with my order number. Not sure what to do at this point. When I try to uninstall the game it gives me an error to the effect of "internal error: the selected application could not be instantiated". I had to check the spelling of that last word, I've never heard that word before. Anyway, just trying anything to get this great game to work. I appreciate the help.

Yeah, I tried re-installing over the previous one and it still claims that the autostart.exe or something doesn't install. And then of course, the trojan warning pops up as well (antivir). So I uninstalled the program through the microsoft explorer and I'm going to download it again and reinstall it. We'll see what that does.

I have this same won't uninstall issue, and I get the same message, about "instantiated". Funky word. I think it means it couldn't start an instance of the app.deedubb81 wrote:Yeah, I tried re-installing over the previous one and it still claims that the autostart.exe or something doesn't install. Anyhow, I just do a brute force delete of the whole "Commander - Europe At War" directory.
Literally, I hit Win-E to fire up explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Slitherine, highlight the "Commander - Europe At War" folder, and hit the Delete key. Then I answer "yes" when it plaintively asks if I'm sure
After that, do a simple re-install, and hey presto! You have a fresh installation of the game.
I've done this as recently as 10 days ago, in response to my inability to connect with ICED via TCP/IP.
OTOH, if you're not comfortable with Explorer, and not familiar with manipulating files & folders, you should probably get some help...or a Mac
Oh yeah, and note that the terms "folder" and "directory" mean the exact same thing. "Directory" is the proper term that goes way back to the days of command-line operating systems. "Folder" is a cutesy word that Microscum came up with to try to make using Winblows more "intuitive", since the icon literally looks like a little file folder.
Yes, all things considered, I do consider a Windows PC to be the optimal gaming platform available today. But that doesn't mean I love the OS, or the company behind it, or its founder

I found out what the problem was behind the game not working. Every time I went to install it my virus scanner (Antivir) would state that it found a trojan by the name of "TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen" so I would naturally delete it. Well, after some research on-line it appeared not to be a true trojan. So taking my own life in my hands, I decided to try an experiment and hit ignore instead of delete to see if that helped. Low and behold, I can now play the game. Of course at the expense of listening to Antivir beep each time I play the game. And I haven't tried the beta 1.07 version yet. Honestly didn't know it existed. If you could tell me where to find it, I would be willing to give a good 'ol college try.

The 1.07 patch is available from the news page or from the main page on the forum for CEAW.
Do you mean 1.06 patch. Everything that I've seen is for the 1.06 patch. If there is a 1.07 could you post a link to it. Thanks.
And I still keep getting that trojan warning from Antivir and it claims its part of the file (c:\program files\slitherine\...\launcher.exe) and the name of the trojan is TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen. If anyone has any ideas how to get rid of this and continue to be able to play CEAW you would be my hero.
