I actually watched part of this series when it was first aired. It was pretty popular here in Japan and i remember seeing the figurines in some shops at the time. They also released a movie of it, although unfortunately i didn't catch it.

The storyline is actually pretty similar to other teen anime ones, with focus on friendship and overcoming hurdles and trials that make you grow as a person - but with the twist that the girls are training to battle in tanks, rather than say, win a volleyball tournament. Yeah, kinda weird - but there is a lot of weird stuff in Japanese anime, so it didn't really stand out that much for weirdness here.
