Ambush!!

Post by Captain_Orso »

 *muhahahaha* poor unsuspecting Taliban wanders into am ANA infantry waiting in Ambush mode.. aaaaaand *BOOM!!* and my patent and very skillful ANA infantry unit doesn't get a promotion  ... and now I'm not so enthusiastic about ambush :(

Is this WAD (Works As Designed)?

Suggestion:
If your unit is in ambush mode, to be able to perform any of the other special tasks (Search for IED's, pick up rations from a nearby FOB) I have to first move the unit. I would agree that performing any of the other special tasks should of course remove ambush mode, but the buttons should simply be available to click, especially if I want the unit to stay right where it is.

Another question  The manual says, on page 45, Rule 4: Infantry/Special Forces units that are at critical supply status automatically get resupplied from a FOB that is within a five (5) hex radius from the unit, provided the FOB has supply stock.

If my infantry unit is in ambush mode, will it still pick up rations, within Rule 4?

Will my grunts remain in ambush mode?

When exactly does this happen? When the foot unit has reached 0 supplies--the supply icon is red--at the end of the turn, after all other actions?

I guess I really need to test this out to the bitter end, but it really makes me nervous and I wind up clicking the resupply button every time

Almost certainly yes, since if it wasn't the case, I'm pretty sure some of my units would've starved by this point.

It's at the end of turn, as that's when the unit would take damage from lack of supplies otherwise.

I understand this is WAD insofar that your guys do not get automatically promoted for every combat or ambush they win - at least thats how I assume it works. But last time I played my units (both US and ANA) did got promoted after some time, so overall there was no prob with promotions....

Actually, the manual does say that ANA infantry are supposed to be promoted after every combat (US units, though stronger to begin with, only get promoted after combats they win).

I'm also curious if ambushes are WAD.

For the ANA, I've noticed that the ANA only promotes if the ambush inflicts hits on the enemy. If it doesn't, then I'm seeing no promotion consistently.

I'm also able to ambush units that I cash see on map. E.g. I move my unit two hexes away from the enemy, press ambush, and the ambush auto triggers. If it wasn't for the ANA promotion reason above, I'd use this form of attack everytime. Not only do you get the 20 bonus in firepower, but you also avoid triggering Taliban ambushes. It feels super exploity. Until they add convoys (and I don't have to manually leap frog my MRAP and huskys; to keep the road clear of ieds but the MRAP in front to deal with potential Taliban) "ambushing" waiting Taliban has been my go to method for clearing them out.

Only US and Taliban infantry have the indirect-fire ambush attack, ambushing ANA can still only engage in close combat. Well, unless the US one is actually bugged and the reason I haven't seen the ANA one is that it isn't *supposed* to go off on units that are already within the ambush range (the manual does say that the two units are supposed to behave identically, but it also doesn't mention that US infantry has an indirect-fire ambush attack at all). The Taliban use theirs only when conducting the Ambush mission specifically, according to the manual.
