Things started out badly for Rob as I won the initiative even though he was +3 on the die roll and I was +0. I choose to fight in the woodlands since his list appeared to be a cavalry-heavy army and my medium foot like to hide in the trees and thumb their noses at horsemen
I deployed two BG of archers behind the hill with another BG of archers moving through the woods to the right of the hill. In the center of the board, I placed my elephants and heavy chariots and on the far left my light chariots to screen and harass enemy movements.
Rob placed a lot of decent cavalry and 2 BG of elephants just left of the table center with 3 BG of LH to harrass my archers and another LH on the far left facing off against my light chariots.
I decided not to fight a defensive battle and my archers basically ignored the hill and just marched over it with the intention of pushing the enemy light horse back and turning that flank. The heavy chariots and elephants advanced with most of the enemy cavalry somewhat left of their position so I began to wheel out to meet them. The Perisan light horse and my light chariots quickly met and began merrily exchanging bow shots with each other.
Other than keeping me from taking a double move, the Persian light horse did little but catch arrows and began to slowly melt from blown cohesian tests as the archers advanced steadily on. In the center one of my heavy chariot units crashed into two Persian cavalry units which were quickly supported by a third unit banging on my chariots. This should have made for a very bad day for me but some phenominal die rolling wound up with my chariots losing one stand and the Perisans had one of their cavalry units routed, another at 25% losses and disordered and a Persian general killed.
My archers continue the advance, routing two of the light horse BG's and coming up on some unprotected Persian archers who had contracted their frontage to allow the 3rd cavalry BG to get into the fight with my heavy chariots. A big unit of protected archers exchanging shots with unprotected archers on a compressed frontage is not a good proposition for the unprotected guys and they are quickly routed and near break point.
Flush with victories, I make a near fatal mistake by charging some Persian cavalry in a single rank with my other heavy chariot unit. They flee away and I wind up pursueing farther than I wanted and end up with my flank hanging out a few inches from some Persian elephants. Ouch!! Happily for me, before the elephants get the chance to clean my chariots clocks, my light chariots route a Persian light horse BG and my archers bag the other light horse unit on their flank which gives me the game by breaking his army.
Another fun game. One of these days I am going to have to leave the Indians at home and play with my Principate Roman army which I have not played FoG with yet
