I finally did it.

It took me all this time, (what, two years? longer?), but I finally finished Cult of Mithras.

I went with the advice to build a small, tight force with all the goodies.

Legate
3x Auxilia
2x Aux. Archers
2x Aux. Cav.
2x Legionnaire
1x Praetorian

While there were a few challenges early on, the concentration of all the exp and all the denarii on just 10 combat units did the trick. I wasn't playing on Very Hard, obviously, but I made it through the whole Roman Campaign and Cult of Mithras without ever even being seriously tempted to turn down the Difficulty.

The uber bow (Bow of Odysseus) really helps with the Archers. They just turn into death on the half-shell at level 26 when they get Grand Master Marksman III and can buy that.

I did, about halfway through CoM, buy a half-dozen Peasant units for sword-fodder. I didn't use them in every scenario, but a couple times they came in very handy for just screening one wing of the enemy army that couple extra seconds. And about a couple seconds is all they buy you. Talk about melting like ice under a stream of boiling water! None the less, they held things up long enough for the Archers to get in that one extra volley that helps.

All in all, CoM went OK this time. I had to re-try a few battles, and several were rather difficult, but I never once got that, "OMFG, this is hopeless!" feeling I'd had on previous run-throughs.

Ahh, it's a good feeling! This had been bothering me for a long time now!

Hi Possum,

Here's a fun challenge - try the Roman Campaign on Normal; but with just your four original units! No pin-cushions or screening troops. Some of the scenarios are a bit tricky, but it can be done. There is a certain sense of accomplishent when your Militia hits Level 100, and the game engine opens up a whole new set of toys, that aren't really supposed to available.

:D
