Waffen SS

Post by Horst »

I’m currently on the Kiev/Ukraine map in Blitzkrieg wondering what units I should pick for the Waffen SS branch. I picked the spec late for this map now, and 6 land points aren’t a lot, especially with the microscopic +2 income.
I guess the specialisation is best to be taken as early as possible now that I know what exactly I get for it, beside the Wiking ski troops.
What units do you pick there? Cheap infantry because of the lower repair cost or better some ranged units like AA and artillery that hardly receives damage?

Yugoslavia, Greece - 2 inf units
Minsk, Smolensk, Kiev - 2 x 8,8cm Flak (AA/AT)
Moscow - 1 x 8,8cm FlaK, 1 x 15cm Hv Artillery

I bought this way :)
I played on the 4th level of difficulty (which is already quite demanding), so I used the Waffen SS for reinforcements for a specific challenge/target/opponent. I had 4 units in the Waffen SS reserve (1 x 8,8cm Flak + 3 x Inf units) during the Moscow Scn.

Have you been able to use the 88 effectively so far?
In Blitzkrieg, you tend to rush continously onward what makes setting up AT guns rather akwardly. I couldn't afford StuGs for a while but right now they serve very well as the blocking and AT-defender role thanks to their defense.
I've quickly gathered 4 fighters in my core the gain air supremacy asap, as nothing drains coins more than enemy aircrafts on the loose. I've bought an core 88 to defend my three 17 cm cannons near Kiev. 88 are never a waste in later war scenarios. The maps get kind of large near the end in Blitzkrieg that you can hardly cover anything with fighters.
Anyway, right now I think the Waffen SS indeed serves rather only well as auxilary defenders or second-line reserve to give your core units a breather once in a while. And I thought they always got the best equipment and supplies during the war.

I used AT guns as infantry support against Russian tanks attack and infantry units as a shield for AT against enemy infantry.
My panzers are far ahead but 8.8 FlaK's are moving together with infantry and artillery.
However, in the last scn (Moscow) there is rather small map and the battle is static, so the artillery units are most needed.

Panzer, Sturmpanzer, StuG, 1-3 infantry/mnt-troops are my effective spearhead groups. Enemy AT-guns are always a nuisance, so you shouldn't go without infantry support which is good. StuGs are mostly targeted by the AI tanks as attacking anything else only makes its units suffer more.
I can already imagine how unbalanced it becomes if you get later the Ferdinand/Elefant or Jagdtiger tank destroyer. In PzC, tank destroyers weren’t that essential like self-propelled artillery, but here in OOB they become as important and powerful as the artillery. Defense mission should become extremely easy with the powerful German tank destroyers later.

My Waffen SS troops were doing fine so far with the meager income. Next to using the Wiking troops, I bought an SdKfz 7/1 (modded supply cost of 3) which isn't that useful at beginning but oh well. At least, I still got enough coins to maintain the ski troops.

Finnished Moscow and the Blitzkrieg now. That was possibly the first mission where you could put an 88 to good use concealed in or behind a primary victory location. The AI aggression must have been set to very high as AI tanks didn't bother about a visible, guarding 88 next to a damaged infantry unit. This is always good for an ouch and laugh when the 88 does 5-9 kills for not rarely a total unit destruction.
My SS 7/1 did a few kills too, so everything was fine besides the boredom in the last half of the Moscow turns when there was almost nothing else to kill anymore.

Well, there are many paths to the same target. Good luck and have fun later in the game!
