I am impressed with unit artwork and detail.
Sure, maybe I'm new to this genre and easily impressed. Maybe this has come to be expected and is now taken for granted but still, I am impressed with the unit artwork and detail in this game.
What I occasionally do is Alt-Tab out of the game, go to Wikipedia, and look up something like a "G3M Rikko" Japanese bomber that just appeared over Henderson Field. Wow, it really does look like the real thing, right down to the twin tail stabilizers!
Nice job. For this noob, it adds greatly to his enjoyment.

I love the unit graphics as well. I'm an old board gamer, but in this game I prefer these graphics to NATO counters.
I usually zoom way in when I perform the attacks just to watch the details.

I too zoom in to watch the attack. The graphics are very well done. Though there are times I miss the old counters.Erik wrote:I love the unit graphics as well. I'm an old board gamer, but in this game I prefer these graphics to NATO counters.

Re: I am impressed with unit artwork and detail.
Nice to hear. The G3M belongs to the first units done for OOB Pacific, and I'd dare to say that over time unit models/gfx became better, but I leave that judgement to you

Re: I am impressed with unit artwork and detail.
The first time I saw the engineers in action I think I scared my wife. I play with headphones and when the engineers broke out their flame throwers.... I actually yelled out "Holy @$*% that was cool".
I zoomed in every attack after that just to see what would happen.
Keep getting better!

Keep getting better!

I love the graphics in Order of Battle, my fav is when say, a tank gets attacked from the flank or rear, it turns around and turret spins around to face the threat. Love it! I love the fact I can recognize unit types too, like the Maltilda and the various Tank and non infantry types.

Re: I am impressed with unit artwork and detail.
It sounds petty, but that's one of the things that turned me off about Panzer Corps which I tried after having played OOB extensively. Two units in PC are likely to be shooting in opposite directions instead of at each other. If I had not experienced OOB animation, perhaps I could have overlooked this in PC but not now.Egogunner wrote:I love the graphics in Order of Battle, my fav is when say, a tank gets attacked from the flank or rear, it turns around and turret spins around to face the threat. Yet, I want to add a comment here. I hope that OOB in the future does not overdo the animation to the detriment of smooth graphics performance on moderately powered and slightly aged computers. I feel the balance of detail and animation with smooth graphics performance is just right in this game.

I was going to say, "Hey, the Sōkō Sagyō Ki is missing its mine-clearing claws!" but if you look real closely, they're on there. This game is amazing.

I like the graphics too. Lots of detail and color.
I'm playing Morning Sun campaign now. I also got the Marines campaign for some joyful island scraps.

Re: I am impressed with unit artwork and detail.
I'm going to continue to bore everybody, but amuse myself, with my observations.
Here are the two Soviet planes "volunteering" for the Chinese Nationalists in the Xuzhou scenario of Morning Sun. The plane on the top right is the Polikarpov I-16 and on the bottom left is the Polikarpov I-153.
The I-16 is a monoplane and therefore the later, more advanced model, yes? No! According to Wikipedia, "Early combat experience from the Spanish Civil War had shown that the I-16 had problems dealing with the Fiat CR.32 biplanes used by the Italian forces supporting the Nationalists [the Soviets were providing assistance to the Republicans, including aircraft], which suggested a need to continue the use of biplane fighters, and as a result, Polikarpov's proposals were accepted, and his design bureau was instructed to design a new biplane fighter." This was the I-153.

Bru I am on that Xuzhou battle right now. I only have 3 planes fielded cause of command point limit plus 2 more auxiliary planes in the north.
About the lower biplane I-153, are you saying the ingame plane is monoplane vs the historical biplane version? The planes in my game that are white with red dots are all biplanes. Some of the dark green planes are monoplanes now like Ki-27 and Ki-30 and 32.

No, I am saying that both Polikarpov models I-16 (mono-wing) and I-153 (bi-wing) are in the game, as you can see circled in the screen print. They are Chinese Nationalist units, not your Japanese planes. By the way, those two planes in that screen print were the ones which are being flown by Soviet "volunteer" pilots for which you can a prize (a forgot what, but it's spelled out in the objectives window) for shooting both down. It was cool in that, if you hover the mouse over them, portraits of the Soviet pilots appear in the information screen below.

Ah okay that makes sense now. I should have payed more attention to the big red circle you drew around the blue star planes.
When I was shooting at the Soviet planes, I was in a battle rage and not noticing their finer details other than their delightful smoke trails on their way down.
Good to know the game is so historically accurate.

Re: I am impressed with unit artwork and detail.
For a pretty penny, I am upgrading my Japanese Type 89 tanks to Type 97 Chi-Ha. I did not notice it on the map, but in the picture of the Type 97 Chi-Ha on the control panel, there appears to be some sort of railing suspended over the turret. I thought it might be a support for a sliding, detachable machine gun but Wikipedia says "The Type 97's low silhouette and semicircular radio antenna on the turret distinguished the tank from its contemporaries." Another neat little detail resulting from somebody having done their homework.

Re: I am impressed with unit artwork and detail.
The semicircle antenna is kept low to avoid being seen or the handle shape is more stylish?
Didn't you want to use the lovely Ha-Go tanks? I went with the much cuter Ha-Gos instead of 89s cause they look nicer and are a bit stronger and have more AT ability. Chi-Ha is more anti-human but I will keep a 2 or 3 Ha-Gos and have a couple of Chi-Has from my next battle.

See? beautiful tank. And looks just as good in the game.
This one has different guns and machine gun is in center instead of on the left side.
I don't know why.
I noticed there are camo paint choices for the tanks ingame.

Re: I am impressed with unit artwork and detail.
I circled the one factor that made me go with the Type 97 Chi-Ha in a side-by-side comparison with the Type 95 Ha-Go. I'm playing Morning Sun and you probably know that the Chinese are strong in numbers with their infantry, militia, and partisan units. What armor they have is comparatively weak. I wanted the tank that was stronger against infantry in this campaign. Now, in my next campaign, Rising Sun (I am playing the Japanese Grand Campaign which links Morning Sun and Rising Sun, allowing export and import of core), I may be interested in going with the Ha-Go because that tank is stronger against mechanised than the Chi-Ha. I figure in Rising Sun, I will be facing American Sherman tanks and I better have the best armored unit available.GiveWarAchance wrote:Didn't you want to use the lovely Ha-Go tanks?
EDIT: Except I just noticed that the Ha-Go is weaker against mechanised defensively. Hmmm. I'll probably still go with the Ha-Go in Rising Sun because, playing as the Japanese, I will be expected to be attacking more than defending and of the two tanks, the Ha-Go as the edge against mechanised offensively. Plus, it's faster so I will be able to also run from the Shermans quicker!

Re: I am impressed with unit artwork and detail.
I think in the real war the Ha-Gos were the most numerous. Okay, I'm going by the number of hago wrecks left on battlefields as museum pieces as well as stories about counterattacks that usually included hagos, so my info not very concrete.
When I play games, I choose units more for how much I like them rather than power-gaming their stats. Both tanks are fairly stylish. I am using mostly Hagos because they kind of cute and have a poor reputation so I feel sorry for them rather than trying to optimize stats. And in the real China war, the Hagos actually did well cause they were just shooting up infantry with little to worry them.

Re: I am impressed with unit artwork and detail.
The M8 Greyhound armored car. LOL, this thing is not much bigger than my car (Buick Regal)! Greyhound length: 16 ft 4.8 in / width 8 ft 3.6 in. Regal length: 15 ft 10.2 in / width 6 ft 1.1 in. This vehicle also has a "halo" around the turret, similar to the Type 97 Chi-Ha I talked about above, but in this case it's not a radio antenna. According to Wikipedia, "a .50 caliber Browning M2HB machine gun on a ring mount was retrofitted to nearly all vehicles already in service."
