Historicon tournaments commentary

Post by babyshark »

Here are a few thoughts from the Historicon tournaments this past weekend.

First, I was very pleased that all games were (as far as I am aware) conducted in a real spirit of sportsmanship. I was never asked for a ruling of the "my opponent is being a jerk" kind, and in each of the limited number of times that I made a ruling it was accepted with good grace by all parties. I overheard a nearby table dealing with an erroneous army list, but I never heard about it in my capacity as referee. The issues raised were dealt with calmly and politely between opponents. Good work, people.

Second, there is a lot more frantic running around involved in organizing a tournament than I ever knew about as a player. Evening up the numbers right before the draw, re-doing the draw (when it turned out that a 25mm player had accidentally signed up on the 15mm sheet), evening up the numbers again (when one player had an emergency at his booth in the dealer area) . . . yipe! Thanks to Ethan for helping with all this. Also, a double extra big thanks to Doug Anderson and Chuck Hines for their willingness to float.

Third, I had a real hoot of a time and look forward to doing it again.

Marc-thanks for the great time and the smooth running of all the events. My bubbies and I played in the classic on Friday and were afraid of the jerk factor going in, but everyone was helpful and listened even to us first timers. It said alot about the great group of people who have moved to FOG from other systems. We'll be back next year if we can, see ya then

I want to thank all the folks who let me watch their games on Friday and Saturday. Everyone was so busy playing tourney games that I was not able to get a "learning game" in, but I learned quite a bit just from watching.

One thing I learned is: beware of Sassasnids wearing lozenges on their heads.
