It basically gives unlimited air supply, regardless of the presence of carriers or airfields.

It is that I understood but when I create a small map 20 x 20 with deep water and a plane, the plane is always low of fuel with off-map air supply source activated.

I guess you need to create an exit/return location.
Unlimited supply does not mean the air units can stay in the air indefinitely like a recon unit.
They go off-map for resupply and repair.

They will fly to exit points when running low on fuel. IIRC they will not redeploy though, even if the exit point is set to "allow redeploy".

Yes, that is good to know and thank goodness I found this old thread.

Erik, I've been prattling to you about using an Exit Hex with Allow Redeploy for air units when you have the AI set for Off-map Air Supply Source but there are two issues:

1) I omitted the need for an air unit Deploy Hex to go along with it but,

2) This works only for the human player, anyway! Lo and behold.

I just spent an hour testing this for the AI.

Why wouldn't these planes fly away to refuel and return? Adequate resources await, but the AI would rather fly them into the ground; only occasionally would one plane fly to the Exit Hex, on strength 1, and never return. It's as if the AI knows that it might as well maximize the planes' usefulness because, one way or the other, it will lose the use of them.

So wherever you may have been counting on this in your work, perhaps you should revisit the idea. Maybe you remembered this, as a matter of fact. Is this why you have those "recycling" exit/re-spawn Japanese air unit triggers in Gin Drinkers Line?

Well, I'm glad I found this thread. I yearn for the old days when you could ask such a question in this forum and receive an official answer, saving much time, effort, and head-scratching.

Bru: "Is this why you have those "recycling" exit/re-spawn Japanese air unit triggers in Gin Drinkers Line?"

Erik: Yes, since there are no Japanese on-map airfields available until they capture one (probably too late to refuel the air units).
