Battle of Gemauerthof 1705

Post by Paul59 »

My latest Great Northern War scenario is now available for download. The is probably my hardest scenario to date, in testing I did not manage to win. Although I did lose very narrowly once, 61% to 56%, so it is probably not impossible.

Here are the design notes;

I used the Great Northern War Compendium, Lars Hoglund's two volumes on the GNW and Tacitus.nu's website as the basis for this scenario.

1) All the artillery pieces on both sides seem to have been battalion guns. Unusually the Russian dragoon regiments had one howitzer as a regimental piece, these were issued in 1704 and rarely used by 1705 due to the cumbersome equipment being unsuited to mobile warfare. However, they were used by the Dragoons at Gemauerthof. I have added Light Gun capability to the first squadron of each Russian dragoon regiment to reflect this.

2) As always with my GNW scenarios, I have distinguished the first squadron (or battalion) of each regiment with an appropriate colonel's flag. This is usually just for show, but in the case of this scenario it helps to distinguish which Russian dragoon squadrons have the light gun capability.

3) I have reduced all infantry units (except Swedes) using less sophisticated firing techniques to 80% Musket. As the Swedes have the Salvo capability, they are already reduced at short range and if I reduce their Salvo percentage that would affect their impact capability. So I withdrawn their Regimental gun capability instead, although I have kept the LG graphic.

4) The Swedish armies were still wearing old style uniforms at this stage in the war, and probably few Swedes were wearing the tricorne yet, especially in Lewenhaupt's army which was a rag tag collection of units that had been campaigning in Poland-Lithuania for many years.

5) This scenario uses the RBS socket bayonet mod, which also allows Swedish salvo infantry to charge cavalry.

6) The Swedish OOB is rather confusing. There is a lot of quite detailed information available, but there are a lot of contradictions, so I have made a few guesses with some of the units.

7) Difficulty Rating; Very Hard

8) Sideicons are as follows;

Swedish; Major General Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupt, commanded at this battle.

Russian; Field Marshal Boris Sheremetev, commanded the Russian army at the battle.

Uniforms and flags; I have given all units their historical uniforms and flags where possible.

Thanks, Paul. Your stuff is always a treat, a feast on every level possible. Look forward to wherever your interests take you and us next (Don't suppose I could bribe you to do The Battle of the Spurs and Thérouanne?)

Actually, you won't believe it, but I have already made a scenario for the Battle of Guinegate (The Battle of the Spurs). It was one of my early scenarios that I made last year, while learning how to design scenarios and I never released it. If you want, I could polish it up a bit and send it to Richard if you want, I seem to remember that it was quite a challenging scenario.

Thanks for the Spurs!

I shall now hear 'challenging' as a euphemism for 'hopeless!'

Wonderful all the same...
